NYCC 09: Jumpgate Evolution Interview

Eyes-On Space's Next MMO

by Coop

There are dozens of MMORPGs in development, and just about all of them look interesting. There’s Champions Online’s focus on customization, DC Universe’s unorthodox take on an Action RPG, and The Old Republic’s promise of revamping the MMO. Though I’m unbelievably excited for all of these, none have my attention like Jumpgate Evolution does. Tapping into my love for science-fiction dog fighting and action-based combat, Jumpgate looks like every Battlestar Galactica/Star Wars fan’s dream, and seeing it at the New York Comic Con did little to quench my undying thirst.

Taking part in gigantic battles aside warring capitol ships seems too good to be true. The developer mentioned a scenario where the two ships would slowly move towards eachother, eventually finding themselves parallel to one another, unleashing massive barrages of missiles while small, player controlled vessels attempt to aid in the battle. It’s in a 3D space, so PCs can strafe sideways along the sides of the ships, caring not for “gravity” or anything like that.

There are also the graphics. Oh, lord the graphics. Instead of focusing on the deep darkness of space, the developers allow players to explore more…colorful vistas. Vibrant colored light sources, like spiraling green galaxies and blazing red suns help differentiate one area from another with dramatic, unique colors. It looks wonderful, there’s no other way to put it, and hopefully the developers are able to create as scalable of an experience as they hope to.

The game is still a ways away, but hopefully Jumpgate Evolution makes its way to shelves as soon as possible. Battlestar Galactica only has a few episodes left and Star Wars isn’t out on Blu-Ray yet – there’s a gap that needs filled.
