PaRappa Creator Interested in Natal

Step On the Gas, Step On the Gas

by Coop

PaRappa the Rapper
creator Masaya Matsuura spoke at a Development Conference in Brighton yesterday, talking about future game design and motion technology. Masaya is no newcomer to motion gaming; his last title, Major Minor's Majestic March, had players swinging around the Wii Remote in 2008.

When Microsoft's Natal was brought up, the developer had interesting things to say about the company's microphone/camera device:

"We are thinking about ideas. I think any kind of interaction with a camera will be good for music games, but the important thing will be how we can find the new breed of gameplay. That will be a very important thing," he said. "Guitar Hero and Rock Band and The Beatles: Rock Band, is just taking traditional rock music. Of course there are so many rock fans on the earth, so they will have a huge impact for the market. But there is other attractive music, so please try to find another style, another interaction, another gameplay with another type of music."

With Microsoft and Sony ready to join Nintendo in the waggle, it seems that every developer is finally getting around to becoming interested in the scene. Obviously Masaya is familiar with the concepts, but Natal seems to move beyond a "controller," for better or worse. What type of music games do you think are possible with Natal? Think Microsoft will woo Masaya to their side for a Parappa game using the peripheral?

Haha all I can think of is the possibility of scanning an onion to unlock new things in Parrapa.

I suppose it's good to see devs getting creative with the new technology already, but who knows if it'll be fun.

Look, anything that means the promise of a new PaRappa game, on any console, is good news to me.
