I was confused when I first received an email asking if I wanted to review a computer power supply. What justice could I do it compared to many of the PC specialty sites on the web? They run tests, do comparisons, and are experts in their fields. I can just barely install a power supply, let alone do dozens of benchmarks and tests.

It came in the mail and I opened it up – the supply was heavy and flat out sexy looking. I have always found it interesting that the inside of a PC is made to look so cool even though it, ideally, should never be seen. The cords are wrapped in an elastic covering that keep them from dangling and ending up getting snapped up in a fan or melting against a processor, which anyone who has heard an unfortunate clicking from inside of their PC can testify is a good thing to include on a product. The fan is large and can surely pump away the heat that I am sure this power plant will put out.

Installation was easy (partially due to the bound wires) and didn’t take any longer then any other I have installed. I guess it was just my worrying mind that would make me think that a bigger and more powerful piece of hardware would be harder to install but, luckily, I was wrong. After installation my PC powered on normally and I ran a few games and programs. What did I notice?

Nothing. The PC ran exactly as before with no problems or no boosts. Having a better power supply (from my 500w) will not change things in an instant. However, in the long run, the effects are obvious. A bigger power supply will open the doors to upgrading and overclocking. The WattSmart 850W Power Supply ran quietly and continues to do so until I am ready for it. It is really ideal for hardcore gamers who are going to find themselves upgrading to a dual core processor – ideal for anyone trying to run some of the amazing games coming to the PC.
