Prototype Loses Co-Op Play
Multiplayer Gets Shafted
by Coop
In an interview with Sierra, creators of the upcoming Prototype, Executive Producer Tim Bennison of Radical Entertainment laid out some bad news: multiplayer has been cut from the game. Originally slated to have at least co-operative play, Prototype will now be a single player affair the whole way through. While this shouldn’t deter anyone from picking this game up as soon as humanly possible, it is still a sad thing to see a cool feature cut.
When asked for the reasons, TeamXbox was given the following response:
"We want gamers to really dig into the main elements of PROTOTYPE – find out about Alex and his past, play through all the storyline and uncover everything there is to find out in the Web of Intrigue, explore all Alex’s different powers and abilities, and use the ‘Deceive or Destroy’ gameplay to get through the game in multiple ways. As you can see there’s already a ton for us to deliver just in PROTOTYPE’s single player experience, so we really need ALL of our resources focused on shipping what we originally set out to do – PROTOTYPE as a ground-breaking, single player open-world/action title."
Sorry, guys, but I don’t believe you. For as much as you might be able to convince yourself that the game is better without online play or that Prototype might come out in 2008 without it, the gaming community will not see it that way. While I don’t think it is worth delaying a game over, I would still like to see developers be more honest about these shortcomings, especially when there is a 75% chance the game will get delayed anyhow. He goes on to mention that it might get multiplayer as some sort of downloadable content in the future, but I wouldn’t recommend holding your breath on that patch.

Can one god damn developer ever just say "WE DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR THE RESOURCES TO GET OUR MULTIPLAYER PERFECT. OUR SINGLE-PLAYER GAME IS TOP NOTCH. SO JUST FRICKEN DEAL, JERKOFFS!"
Agreed. Developers are always manipulating (funny, huh?) their extremely loyal fan base. They love to keep us on our toes and tell us a week or two before release that it's going to be delayed due to "something".
I was looking forward to the single player part of this game the most and am happy that it's going to stand on its own two feet in a multiplayer world.
