PS3 BioShock Requires Large Installation
All Large Installs of this Generation Flow into the PS3?
by Coop
Destructoid is reporting that the PlayStation 3 version of BioShock has a mandatory 4980MB installation, which will take about 10 minutes to complete. While it is far from a huge chunk of the 60GB or 80GB systems, PS3 owners who opted for the smaller harddrive must be feeling the pinch more than ever, and I doubt this will be the last title of the year to require such space. There haven’t been any confirmations on what this installation will do, because as you can see above, the graphics aren’t really any better than the other versions, but if it cuts down on BioShock’s loading times I can’t really complain too much. That said, I'll now complain.
I still can’t stand behind this generation’s mandatory use of installations for games without any justification. Having it as an option would obviously be a much better idea, because multiplatform releases only requiring installation on the most advanced current generation platform doesn’t make much sense.

i figured their justification was shorter load times? Thats what they have always said about HDD installs. I personally don't mind them, I am about to upgrade my PS3 to a bigger HDD anyway so its not an issue for me.
See, this is another reason I would pick a 360 game over a PS3 game. I have a 60 gig PS3 hard drive, but this stuff adds up! In the case of BioShock it doesn't really matter to me since I've had it on the 360 since it came out, but I agree with you completely: installations should be mandatory. Slightly faster load times won't mean much to me when my hard drive is full.
Large install with minimal load time is the new black!
...Uh, installations SHOULDN'T be mandatory, or should be OPTIONAL, is probably what I meant to say. Whoops.
I mean, I agree with you Coop, but only in the way that I completely disagree!
so what ya trying to say Sarah? :)
Boo to the installation unless it adds a different feature for the game. Faster loading times? Maybe swallow less RAM when processing? Who knows? The only thing that remains at the end of the day is that these downloads might really become mandatory for all consoles. They increased the size on the XBox360, right? Not only for DLC but, eventually, may wind up being for the same purpose as downloads on the PS3.
