Renegade Kid Interview Part 1
We Talk to Renegade Kid about Renegade Kid
by Coop

Recently, we had a chance to talk to Jools Watsham, Owner & Game Director for Renegade Kid LLC. Before we got into the details about their software, we wanted to know a little history of the company. In the end, the interiew ended up being a little on the long side, so check back later for part two, where the developer talks about their DS and DSi titles: Dementium II and Maximilian.
How did Renegade Kid form? What's the company's history?
Renegade Kid formed in early 2007. Myself [Jools Watsham] and Gregg Hargrove founded the company. At the time we were developing Dementium: The Ward, funding it out of our own pockets. Both Gregg and I have worked together for over 15 years, and always talked of starting our own company together. After we completed Dementium: The Ward, we developed Moon. And now we're wrapping up Dementium II.
What titles have you released so far?
Dementium: The Ward and Moon for the Nintendo DS.
What systems do you like working with?
I love working with the DS, it is a great platform. Prior to starting Renegade Kid I worked on every platform from the NES to the previous generation of consoles (Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube). Working on big consoles titles is very different than DS games, and also very enjoyable and exciting.
Any plans to expand and work on more home consoles?
Yes, absolutely. We plan to move onto other platforms and will eventually develop next-gen console titles.
What do you currently have in the works?
We're completing Dementium II now. We also have a handful of original concepts that we're kicking around, such as Maximilian and Son of the Dragon for Nintendo DS. These are personal projects really, which we hope will meet with a publishing partner in the future.
How has Nintendo been when it comes to helping developers with DSiWare?
We love working with Nintendo. They make it easy. We have everything we need to develop for DSiWare.
Do you see DSiWare gaining any momentum?
DSiWare is off to a slow start, but I think (and hope) it will gain more momentum as more top-tier titles, like March of the Minis and Mighty Flip Champs, are released through the DSiWare Shop.
Whatever happened with Son of the Dragon?
The original project was slatted as a Wii / DS combo, but due to the sales of "hardcore" games on the Wii it was cancelled by the publisher. We have decided to continue with the DS development on the side as we believe it would be an excellent addition to the DS library.
Check back later in the week for Dementium II and Maximilian information straight from Renegade Kid.
