Rumor: Blu-Ray 360 Announcement Imminent

Imminent as in Tomorrow

by Coop

Usually rumors have a huge length of time between the writing and the supposed event, so it doesn’t always pay to cover every one that comes across our desks, but this one is a little different. At the Worldwide Developer's Conference tomorrow, Apple is likely announcing the new iPhone with a bunch of new features that will make your old one look like a shiny brick. In a move to steal the headlines a little earlier in the day, Microsoft may be announcing that the Xbox 360 will have Blu-Ray functionality by Christmas.

Many people have doubted this announcement, mainly because it wouldn’t make sense for Microsoft to try and steal the spotlight from an iPhone announcement and, in all likelihood, this wouldn’t even come close to taking headlines, but I disagree. A large portion of PS3 sales can be attributed to Blu-Ray functionality, and if Microsoft was able to get the units out for the rumored price ($449.99) I could see it being as big of news as a phone with two cameras. We will have more on this as/if it develops.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be another USB attachment, if it does exist. Swapping out the innards of the 360 this late in it's life would be a big gamble.

I know this can only happen in the land of never, but it would be great if MS and Sony joined forces nd created the ultimate console full of only the best format/hardware available.

Imagine it - Better games, better quality and NO MORE FANBOIS!!!
While were at it, let's merge Windows and Linux. This VS that forum threads would cease to exist. Ahhh, Utopia.

I disagree, I like competition between the consoles. If there was only one console, why on earth would they strive to make the best console ever. You'll buy it cause you have to. There isn't another choice. They can charge whatever they want, make you pay extra for all the peripherals. It's like living in a town with only one gas station. They can piss in your tank and still charge you 5 bucks a gallon.

In regards to Blu-Ray. I hope its a peripheral, cause I just got an xbox a month ago....just my luck.

Thats why it was in the land of never. In the land of never, companies are actually altruistic and don't care about profits. They only care about making people happy. It's just an ideological musing. I'd settle for the end of Fanboism, but that too can only happen in the afore mentioned Land of never.

As far as peripherals go, they charge you for that anyway.

I think it would be pretty stupid to not release a 360 blu-ray as a peripheral... people who already have 360s who want blu-ray will still be better off going the ps3 route, in that case.

You are crazy! It's just too bad that your thoughts were transmitted to the rest of the rumor mill and, thus, created many a thread based upon it.

All kidding aside I'd hope that MS does make it a peripheral, if anything, because it would give 360 owners something for less than another console. On the other side of the coin I see many a 360 owner crying because of the price of such a peripheral. The BD drives for computers are about as much or more than a PS3.

Never mind. I think the peripheral is the way to go for the 360 but don't see it actually being done until the next generation of XBox.
