Rumor: Fat Princess Banned in Japan?

Japanese Gamers Must Use Five Finger Discount to Get It

by Coop

Apparently, and this is absolutely a rumor, PlayStation Network title Fat Princess has been delayed indefinitely in Japan. Word is that it was outright banned by the government because of the character design. No, it isn't because of the game's portrayal of women, but because of its portrayal of... hands. Characters in Fat Princess only have four fingers, which apparently rubs some in Japan the wrong way enough to keep the game off digital shelves entirely.

That's right, the game may have been banned because of a taboo about people with four fingers. Four is often associated with the Japanese burakumin minority, a group that has, over the years, become more vocal about their misfortunes. This wouldn't be the first time such a change was mandated - Left 4 Dead's boxart had a thumb added for good measure, and Bob the Builder had to be re-drawn with a fifth finger before entering the Land of the Rising Sun - but it's still a bit strange to see a game as innocent as Fat Princess to be targeted.

The NSFW source is a little shady (and filled with anime porn, so be warned), but it's an interesting story either way. We've reached out to Sony for an official comment, so stay tuned to find out if this game you don't care about is banned in a country you don't live in.
