Rumor: Google to Buy Valve

*UPDATE* Gaaaaaabe, You Have Some 'Splanin to Do!

by Coop

UPDATE: Know how the teaser to this article was "Gaaaaaabe, You Have Some 'Splanin to Do!"? Well, he 'splained, and says it's a rumor.

This is a strange one: TheInquirer.com is reporting that they have well placed sources that are telling them that Google will announce, in a matter of seconds, that they are buying Valve, creators of Half-Life 2, Portal, and the upcoming Left 4 Dead. Apparently it has less to do with the fact that they are one of the best publishers and developers in the industry, and more to do with the fact that their digital distribution program, Steam, is one of the leading forms of content distribution on the internet. If this does go through, and The Inquirer seems to think that it will, it will put another notch in Google’s plan to dominate the internet, one kilobyte at the time.

They had better not screw this up. I’m a huge fan of both companies, but will turn on Google in a second if they as much make a single change I don’t agree with. Valve has made it so far by running things their way, and Google had better not screw that up. Even as much as changing their name and I’d flip, because for as much as I love buying a Valve game I don’t know what I think about Google Game Studios (or GGS, as it will soon be called). We will keep you posted, and if the story checks out, have an update “in a matter of seconds."

Google is usually pretty hands-off, but I could see them bogging down Steam with an infinite amount of software and content.

I'm not quite sure how this would either benefit or hinder Valve as a whole. We'll just have to wait and see.

Google and EA will eventually own us all. And then there will be a final, months-long battle, fought on the Bonneville Salt Flats, until either EA or Google stands triumphant.
