Rumor: Legendary Pictures to Acquire Epic Games?
Or: Variety Gaffes Again?
by Coop
Variety, who’s currently batting .000 in terms of Gaming Industry buyout news, has reported that Legendary Pictures is looking to purchase Epic Games. Legendary has had several hits recently, including the Dark Knight, and Epic, of course, is making Gears of War 2. This would be a huge deal, but I don’t understand why it would happen. Legendary just doesn’t make enough films to justify buying a studio for them specifically, and Epic has a large deal with Microsoft Game Studios, who pays for most of their stuff anyway.
“If the deal is consummated, Variety reports, “Legendary would be the first film financing company to start investing money in videogames. Several studios, including Warner Bros., where Legendary is based, have recently started spending their own money on games.”
That said, remember that Variety said that Google was going to buy Valve, which turned out to be completely and utterly fake. So, in other words, ignore it until someone else reports the same thing.
