Shadow of the Colossus Movie in Development?

Is Nothing Sacred?

by Coop

Variety is reporting that one of the best video games of all time, Shadow of the Colossus, is being turned into a feature-length movie. I'm excited up until the involved parties are mentioned, where any joy is washed away and replaced with dry heaves. Writer Justin Marks of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li "fame," and producer Kevin Misher, best known for The Scorpion King, are attached to the film adaptation. Part of me wants to say "At least it isn't Uwe Boll!" but that part is silenced by an urge to cry. Why? Because Shadow of the Colossus can't be filmed.

Shadow of the Colossus can't be filmed, at least not in any way Hollywood would shoot it. Its brilliance was in simplicity, portraying a dead, lifeless world. SotC is a fairy tale with a silent hero, attempting to topple giants to save a fallen princess. Until the last segment of the game most of the dialogue is between a booming, godly voice and The Wanderer, tasking him with another duty. There's no happy ending, just a strange moral. The backstory is left unexplained for a reason, and it's part of what makes the experience so utterly remarkable. Team ICO was sure to leave things open, and these same things cannot be left unanswered in a film - it just can't happen.

Reports are that Marks's script calls for expanding on minor characters, namely the men attempting to stop the Wanderer. This can't happen, since the journey is about unknowing and uncertainty. I'm far from an elitist, I usually am fine with film remakes and book adaptations, but this one just doesn't work, and I'll be watching from the shadows, praying it doesn't happen.

Then again, if they get the right director...

Yeah, I love this game, but there's no way it will work as a movie.

May I remind you all that it will be super easy to NOT see this movie and if we all stick our heads in the sand and hum loudly, then it's almost like no one is trying to ruin all of our favorite things....

Okay, I'm probably going to get lit for this but while the game was incredible, I didn't like the story all that much. The lack of background caused me to not get attached to the main character. Maybe it's just me...

@Coop: The story was minimal and left so much to the imagination that it seemed just okay to me. Maybe it's because I didn't play Ico but I don't think so. Do you really think that the story is much better than say God of War? Like Voyou said, epic battles though.
