I'm surprised Sigourney Weaver isn't in gaming news more often. She was in both Alien and Ghostbusters, both of which are receiving blockbuster, high-budgeted gaming sequels in the near future with Ghostbusters: The Game and Aliens: Colonial Marines. It would seem likely that both games would, or at least could, use her voice, but the question is: is she going to be in them?

“They wanted me to do Ripley and I said, Well you have Ripley killing aliens but also sick people and other marines! And every other word out of my mouth was a curse word. I’m not a nun or anything, but I said, ‘This is not true to the character.”

Ouch. For as much as I’d like to make fun of her for the sake of clever mudslinging… she sounds right. Usually people who speak out against this sort of thing sound uninformed, like Matt Damon explaining why he didn’t want his likeness in the the violent Bourne Conspiracy game (despite being in violent movies), but she has a damn fine point. It doesn’t sound Ripley-like to curse all the time; that’s not the character at all. Overusing foul language is an issue in a lot of games, and can oftentimes hurt the narrative if not used effectively. Remember Alone in the Dark? Army of Two? They both start with an A, and BAM, so does Aliens: Colonial Marines.

She was also asked about Ghostbusters, and had an interesting response:

“I’d be part of one that was high quality, I don’t think they even asked me to be a part of the [new] ‘Ghostbusters’ one. If they did I don’t remember it and maybe I was just busy.”

That seems like a missed opportunity. I don't think Bill Murray or Dan Aykroyd would be part of the game if it weren’t of high quality, so if that's her only reservation she should get in the studio as soon as possible. I'd love to see more actors reprise their film roles in video games. Hopefully this becomes a trend, especially if the graphics continue to improve as dramatically as they have over the past few years.
