Soldier of Fortune: Payback Interview
Your Questions Have Been Answered!
by Coop
You asked the questions here, now Activision has answered them!
1. What are the controls like? Can you lean around corners or take cover?
The controls are smooth, well mapped and incredibly straightforward. The spirit of Soldier of Fortune is a mixture between both “run and gun” and tactical. There are plenty of objects to take cover behind, but just because you’re behind something doesn’t mean the enemy will shoot from afar. These guys aren’t afraid to get up close and personal!
2. Did you have any hardware issues? How is the frame rate?
There are always some issues in the beginning when you’re making a game with such detailed graphics, but overall I think it was a smooth development. We didn’t have any hardware problems in the last leg of the development so we’re very happy with how things went. I think when you see the game you’ll agree that the frame rate is solid.
3. Many skeptical gamers have blamed recent game delays on the Playstation 3. Were there any development issues with the Playstation 3 that you encountered while making a multi-platform game?
The Xbox 360 version was where we started and based all of our development, we then moved it over to PC and PS3. In all honesty it just takes time, it’s not necessarily all about difficulty so much as the complete overhaul the game needs to undergo in order to get it on another system.
4. How did Playstation 3 development compare to Xbox 360 or PC development?
Like I said, it’s just different. Developing on 360 and PC are also different, but since it’s Microsoft and PC is also (mostly) run on Windows, there is some crossover whereas PS3 is a whole new format.
5. Does either (Playstation 3 or Xbox 360) version have a technological edge, similar to the higher
I haven’t seen anything to suggest any edge and we certainly haven’t built anything in. Bottom line is that we want the highest quality on all systems.
6. Does any version (PS3/360/PC) have any exclusive content, like mod support for the PC or downloadable content for Xbox Live or Playstation Network?
At this point we don’t have any plans for mods on PC. Downloadable content is always an option, but at the moment we’re focused on making sure the game is done, shipped and awesome.
7. Did you to have any problems with the ESRB?
With the Soldier of Fortune lineage, you have to expect a pretty brutal game. We knew going into this that we were going to be an M rated game so we had no problem with the ESRB throughout the rating process.
8. With the violence in the game, were you aiming more for "realism" or just over-the-top?
That’s a really good question and I’m glad it came up. We did a ton of research in making this game. We visited a training facility for soldiers, watched countless videos of combat (including people being shot). We came to the conclusion that making a game that was totally realistic would churn your stomach, not be a fun gameplay experience. We had to make a judgement call and we decided that we’d make it as realistic as we could while still making it enjoyable and a little over the top.
9. Seeing several of your videos, do you guys watch future weapons? What inspirations did you have for the game?
I happen to love that show! I think one of my favorites was the sniper rifle with exploding rounds. Like I’ve said before there’s a very rich history behind Soldier of Fortune games. We did a ton of research through books, magazines and videos. Our real inspiration was making a fun game that lived up to the name “Soldier of Fortune.”
10. What is the single player plot like?
The Single player plot is? deffinetely going to keep you on the edge of your seat. The plot is straight forward enough to pull you in, but it’s got some twists that will definitely piss you off and make you want to see this whole thing through. I don’t want to ruin it, but there’s a reason it’s called “Payback.”
11. What is the multiplayer like?
Multiplayer is great, we’ve incorporated a few different match types like deathmatch, team deathmatch, elimination, team elimination, capture the flag and demolition. The Xbox 360 version has leaderboards built in through Xbox Live.
12. What features are you most proud of in the game?
I think it’s been a great team effort on our side and we’re really proud of it as a whole. Getting a game developed and on store shelves is an accomplishment and no matter how many we’ve done it’s still something to be proud of. Other than that, we really like the fact that you can blow someone’s leg off and they have 10 seconds before they bleed out to shoot you back! It’s awesome in multiplayer!
We would like to thank Activision for answering your questions and we look forward more opportunities like this in the future.

Holy crap this game sucked. I can't wait to post my review!
WAHOO! my question was the one about future weapons. I knew he watched that show.
I take it back. I actually can wait to post my review, as staying conscious and unfrusterated long enough throughout the singleplayer game is proving to be a challenge.
