Sony Drops PS2 Price Tomorrow

Console to Retail for $99

by Coop

John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing for Sony, has announced that the PlayStation 2 will be receiving a price drop, and will retail for $99 as of tomorrow. If there's still anyone in the world who missed out on playing some of the best games of the last generation (and didn't pick up a PlayStation 3 while they still had backwards compatibility) this is a fantastic time to grab the console for an insane price. It isn't even technically a dead console, with new games every week, though it is far and beyond the cheapest, beating out even the Nintendo DS for that title.

Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X... the list goes on and on. It shouldn't take me listing some of my favorite PlayStation 2 games to convince you to buy one, either you have one, you're leaving now to buy one, or you simply don't want one. While many were hoping that Sony would be dropping the price of the PlayStation 3 instead of the PS2, this is still fantastic news, and I'm sure there are a few of you who will take advantage.

    Voyou with something bad to say about Sony? Hell must have frozen over because my toes are suddenly very chilly...

    Although, if i was in the market for a PS2 it seems like now would be a very good time to get one. I wonder if the price of the LEGO Batman bundles that are still laying around will go down as well.

    @seanasaurus: lol

    This might be the thing that has finally convinced me to get a PS2. Not kidding... never owned one.

    I'm with Sean. At that price, it might be worth checking out.

    I *might* re-invest in the system. There are a few PS2 games that I wouldn't mind owning. My PS3 isn't backwards compatible. Bastard. Maybe this means that the used price would go down, too? I'd still rather get a new system, just in case there are "ghosts in the machine" with a used system.

    Might be time, indeed.

    I still can't believe this system is STILL going strong years after the release of the PS3. Sony obviously did something right because the Gamecube and XBox are fossils in the gaming graveyard. PS2 is the Clint Eastwood (Gran Turino style) of consoles. It's an old war veteran that refuses to die, and refuses to admit itself to the hospital. It will not die until it has accomplished something big.
