Sony Expanding PSN ID Past PlayStation Brand for Video Content

Blu-Ray Players and Windows PCs Included

During Sony's keynote during this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, PlayStation boss Kazuo Hirai spent a little time talking about the PlayStation Network. No, he didn't confirm a pay-service model, this isn't E3, but he did briefly talk about Sony's video on demand service. While he didn't go into many details, it was discussed that the PlayStation Network ID would soon be used on both PC and Blu-Ray players, sharing both content and wallets when it comes to downloading videos through the service.

While this might not sound like a huge announcement, integrating different Sony systems and uniting them under the PlayStation branding is, indeed, sort of a big deal. Beyond showing Sony's commitment to the PlayStation brand, which isn't something anyone was doubting, it means sharing content between different hardware devices is in the works, which is something anyone should be able to get behind. One of the reasons many might stray from buying HD videos from the PlayStation Network is due to the limited options when it comes to play, but if a number of different hardware devices could use the same downloaded video without any additional cost it means a lot more.

I'm sure there will be a press release further detailing this in the near future, so stay tuned.
