Spore: The Greatest Risk in the Industry?

EA Would Like to Think So

by Coop

EA CEO John Ricitiello recently gave a keynote speech in which he spoke very highly of the anticipated vaporware title: Spore.  He does, however, acknowledge that the game is a massive risk for the company.

"It's probably the greatest creative risk maybe going on in the game industry today. I believe it's going to be one of the greatest franchises in our industry and will rival World of Warcraft or The Sims or Rock Band. It's going to be right up there."

I can’t decide how I feel about that quote. One the one hand, they are spending a massive amount of money to let Will Wright, the game’s developer, do whatever he wants. On the other hand, he he has yet to touch a franchise and not turn it into gold, so is it even a risk? I can’t decide…

Will Wright’s newest baby is years in the making and, at this point, even some of the strongest supporters of the title sit, jaw agape, wondering where it is. As the development cycle has rolled on I have lost interest in the title, seeing it transform from an amazing idea where a player acts as a god, creating life and influencing its actions, to simple The Sims: Alien Edition. Is it wrong of me to want less control? Can’t I see what kind of vehicles they design due to the world they live in instead of making my own, or am I expecting too much from a game by the Sims creator?

in that case, maybe we'll see this game by the time the xbox 720 comes out.
