Star Wars RPG Gets the KOTOR Treatment

The Force is Strong With This One

I nearly wet myself when Sean sent me this. Apparently already released, Wizards of the Coast has published a Knights of the Republic RPG book that follows the SAGA system, which sounds like a blend of the 4th Edition rule set mixed with 3.5 aspects. This isn’t new news at all, WotC has been pushing out Star Wars RPG books for years, but I am excited for the book nevertheless. It covers the Star Wars Expanded universe, including:

  • 10 new playable alien races.
  • 21 new feats.
  • 3 new prestige classes, plus updates to old classes.
  • 10 new Jedi powers, and two new Jedi talent trees.
  • 15 new droid types.
  • Dozens of characters, from Sith assassins to noble Jedi advisors.
  • More than 20 new starships.

I’m not 100% sure how it plays, but from the sounds of it I’m very excited. I have already contact Wizards of the Coast for more information and will be sure to follow this up. io9 says that the book also talks about alternative views of the Force, for those who don’t subscribe to one specific side and think the whole “Jedi vs. Sith” nonsense is for the birds. I love the idea of Force Agnostics (and even Force Atheists) who take a more scientific view of the world around them, bringing more life to the Star Wars Universe.

I know that it wouldn’t be hard to get some players to stay after work on a Monday and see if the force is strong in them, even if they had never dreamed of playing a tabletop RPG, and be sure to check back for more RPG news.

Nooo! Oh, wait. This could be a good thing. Been a while since I've had friends that play paper-and-dice games. So much so that I was forced to retire all my die. Die was right pluralizing dice, right, or is it the opposite of that? Either way I had to retire them because they weren't being used for about two years now. I might just have to crack open the vault and set up a game with other Star Wars fans that I know just go get my feet planted in this new edition.

First edition blew. Second edition is the last time I played the game. That's how long it's been since I played. A few months ago I visited some old friends in Virginia and played a one-shot Bruja for a few hours before a wedding with eight other guys. It was fun and my character died, most tragically, and epically.

May the Force be with you, always.

    Holy Hot, Batman!

Now I really wish I had the time for a pen-and-paper game. The old republic has been my favorite Star Wars time period thus far (probably due to George Lucas not having a lot of creative input).

And come on, seriously?! That Sith Lord has three purple lightsabers circling him. Force Awesome!

(Wait, Force Atheist class? Coop, I think you need to work for WotC.)

I was reading it at work and it was great!

Could the reason for the quick translation of the 4E rules be due to the fact that KoTOR was essentially a D&D based game to begin with and they (Bioware and WotC) want that same feel in the upcoming MMO? That would be cool... now if I could only find people near me that have knowledge in all things D&D so's I can give this a try...

Seanasaurus that's likely right, on top of the fact that I heard that many of the aspects of Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition were drawn from the popularity of the original Star Wars RPG, so it was more or less meeting it half way.

On a related note, just heard back from Wizards of the Coast - expect a review of KOTOR RPG within a few weeks.

Wee! This looks fun as hail!

I'll personally be roleplaying a bounty hunter, and more than likely spend my sessions hunting all the other PC's who rolled Jedi.

Good insight, Seanasaurus, I think you are correct.
