Top Ten Reasons to Own a PlayStation 3

Because Every Console is Still Worth it

by Coop

Two years back, we wrote a few articles about how sick and tired we were of people complaining about the “Console Wars.” Sure, it was good and fun when we were seven, but hearing people write off the Wii as a “child’s toy,” saying that there isn’t anything worth buying on the PlayStation 3, or complaining about the Xbox 360 RROD is annoying and, for lack of a better word, simply ignorant. Instead of just sitting here and frowning, wishing the world was more ideal, we've decided to do something about it. It has been a while, things have changed since the last time we actually sat down and looked at it, and it's time, yet again, to think about the best reasons there are to own each console. First up, the PlayStation 3.

10. The PS3 Motion Controller

Call it the Wand, call it the Arc, call it what you will, no matter what it's called, the PS3's motion controller looks really, really cool. When compared to Natal and the Wii Motion Plus, it seems to have more practical applications, giving us access to the lightsaber games we've wanted for years. It was just shifted back to fall to assure it's going to have a killer launch lineup, and early reports are that Sony is going to put a lot of emphasis on this thing at the end of the year.

9. The PlayStation Store

What the PlayStation 3 lacks in backwards compatibility, it has made up for with downloadable software. Great games like PixelJunk Shooter and Super Stardust HD are wonderful, and the ability to download PlayStation games is an added bonus that makes the Virtual Console seem archaic by comparison. There are quite a few classic and hard-to-find PS1 titles readily available, such as Final Fantasy VII and VIII, the first three Resident Evil games, and Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, to just name a few. Paying a few bucks for a digital copy sure beats the prices on eBay and in specialty stores.

8. Hard Drive

The PlayStation 3's built-in hard drive is important. Sure, the Xbox 360 has an attachable one and the Wii has a few MB of space, but neither can be used by developers in the same way the PS3's spacey hard drive can. Installing games is only a minor problem, especially when it's a game that people actually care about, and can be utilized by developers to make the PlayStation 3 version of multiplatform games stand out. It's just another tool for developers, and the fact that it's easily swappable with larger units (and not horribly overpriced) means running out of space should never be an issue.

7. David Jaffe

David Jaffe is sort of an ass; he's like the PlayStation 3's Cliffy B. The difference between the two, however, is that Cliff has spent the generation blowing away gamers with Gears of War, and Jaffe made Calling All Cars and spends most of his time yelling at the internet on twitter. Still, he's the creator of both God of War and Twisted Metal, and if he could create both of those series, there's no doubt that he can create wonderful games again. We don't know about you, but that's a card we'd like to have in our hand.

6. The PSP

For the past two generations, Nintendo has tried its best to make handhelds mix with consoles. They have, for the most part, failed. Everyone assumed that a secondary function of the Virtual Console would allow old games to be played on the DS, and the introduction of the SD-card-holding DSi essentially confirmed that. Where is it? No one knows. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 3 has the ability to let players play full PS3 games on their PSP over the internet, and while it hasn't really been taken advantage of, the technology is nothing short of exhilarating.

5. 3D

If Avatar taught us one thing, it's that James Cameron is made of ham and cheese. If it taught us two things, it's that 3D is in. It might be a fad but, in the meantime, 3D is going to be a part of all of our lives. While the Xbox 360 has the power to display 3D gaming as well, Microsoft isn't in the position Sony is to really make it work. At CES this year, Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman, President and CEO of the Sony Corporation, called the PS3 Sony's "foothold" in the household. Chairmen don't throw that word around willy-nilly, so expect to see 3D supported in a big way.

4. The PlayStation Network is Free

It isn't great, we're not going to lie and say that the PSN holds a candle to Xbox Live. In fact, Sony still isn't where Microsoft was when the Xbox 360 launched, and that's fairly disappointing. What the PSN does have over XBL, though, is price, and while many PlayStation users would gladly throw down a few dollars a month for cross-game chat and the party system, there's something to be said about keeping the service free.

3. The Uncharted Series

This isn't a list of the top ten games to buy, and we don't want to fill this with a bunch of exclusives. That said, a few stand out, and we'd be insane if we didn't at least mention Uncharted. Both the original and the sequel are arguably some of the best games of the generation, if not the decade, and it's an experience only possible on the PlayStation 3. In terms of, well, everything, both games are a necessary experience, and gamers are shorting themselves if they don't play them both as soon as possible. Naughty Dog has already hinted at a sequel, and unless they end up pulling Uncharted Kart Racer out of nowhere, we're looking forward to Uncharted 3 in another two years or so.

2. Blu-Ray

Say what you will about the console as a game machine, but there's no denying that the PlayStation 3 is the best Blu-Ray player on the market. It's upgradable, comes with a large hard drive, and still costs less than the average set-top player. With HD-DVD a thing of the past and US internet speeds still far from fast enough to allow digital distribution to take over, the way of the future, at least the near future, is Blu. The built-in support also gives developers a huge amount of space to work with, and while swapping disks isn't that big of a deal, there's still something to be said about having more room to work with.

1. Present and Future Software

Within the past few years, plenty of great games have been released for the PlayStation 3. The Ratchet & Clank games, inFamous, Metal Gear Solid 4, and LittleBigPlanet are all day-one purchases, and it wouldn't be a stretch to say that no console's future is as bright as the PlayStation 3's. That doesn't mean the other systems won't have great games in 2010 and beyond, it's just that, well, they haven't been announced yet. In the next few months alone, Heavy Rain, MAG, ModNation Racers, White Knight Chronicles, and God of War III are all coming out, each having potential to be some of the strongest exclusive titles of the year. Later, it's likely we'll see another Resistance in 2010, as well as whatever Rockstar is cooking up with Agent and LA Noir. With Sony taking huge jumps forward and the sales numbers raising every day, there's no greater time to own a PlayStation 3.

I like the list. Just why did you use the original font when so many people know the new font that they use on the console? I like the Spiderman font, myself, but do others?

Nice list here. Gotta agree with everything. One thing you didn't mention was PS1 Classics. Those can be played on both the PS3 and PSP. And who can forget gamesharing?

I will always feel more comfortable with a DualShock controller in my hands than any of the others. Designed to be pretty much perfect from the get-go.

if I could afford one i'd totally purchase a PS3 now. The Uncharted series pretty much clinched that.
