Name: Transformers The Game
Genre: Action
Platform: Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS, PSP (Reviewed for Xbox 360)

This will be the third time I review a game based on a movie for Gamervision.
In my review of Pirates of the Caribbean I stated the following truism about the outcome of movie based games:

A crappy plot that tries, but fails, to mirror the movie (without giving TOO much away.)

Buggy gameplay because of trying to force the developers to meet or beat the release of the movie.

Short single player mode for both reasons above.

So far all of the above were true for both Pirates and Harry Potter . Did the same fate fall upon Transformers?

I have yet to see the movie, but I have heard good things. What was said, in general, is that the movie is all explosions and little plot. For a movie this can be bad, but for a game it is common place. Sadly, the game doesn’t deliver even that. It has some good things going for it but in the end it is not worth the trouble.

"Freedom is the right of all sentient beings"

The single player splits the game into being either the honorable Autobots or the power hungry Decepticons. The campaigns are not just cosmetically different – they are different stories altogether. While an Autobot mission may rely on saving people a Decepticon mission will rely on destruction.

There are several problems with the campaign. One is that it relies far too much on the novelty of transformation. It may be good, in theory, to be able to turn into a vehicle on command and back into a robot whenever you want, but when the game relies on it the concept does not stand on its own. Chasing enemies and shooting at them to get them to transform back into robots becomes repetitive and so do all of the missions. The game’s forcing you to turn into a car for certain parts wouldn’t be as painful if the car controlled well. At first, while driving Bumblebee, I thought it was on purpose. The turning was bad and felt more like a tank then a car. Then again, Bumblebee is supposed to be a junker of a car so I let it slide. Later when controlling Jazz, a nice sports car, I realized it was not just the bee; it was all of them. We gamers are spoiled by the likes of Forza; if any company thinks it can get away with sloppy driving it has another thing coming.

The main form of the transformers is also hard to get a grasp of. Players can shoot, attack, jump and block. The problem is there is hardly ever a time it is a good idea to do anything other than to throw cars at your enemies. Most of the time they will sit there with their shield up until they are hit with something, which is a task in itself because picking up objects is one of the hardest things to do in the game due to bad programming. You can stand next to an object hitting B over and over again but if you aren’t angled just right your Transformer will bend up and down stupidly and empty handed.

The game has many unlockable features like previews for the movie. It does not support any online features, however, which is a disappointment. While the game suffered from a repetitive single player campaign with sloppy controls and bad collision detection and camera, it would have still been fun to destroy cities online. If you loved the movie it is worth a rent, but otherwise…
