From time to time, games hit high notes that are hard to reach for. They shoot as high as they possibly can and throw care to the wind to hit an ambitious goal. Two Worlds shot for that goal and I think their gun jammed.

The promise with Two Worlds was to bring a more open Oblivion to the RPG world. One where your choices directly affect gameplay (like we haven’t heard that before) and there are hundreds of hours of things to do. This was not delivered. While actions can lead to world changed they often don't. This is a problem as much as the lack of character customization. There are very few choices of how your character can look and, well, they all end up looking the same. The world is much smaller than expected and dozens of hours are to be expected instead of hundreds. Actually, a dozen is more like it.

Graphically the game does not aim to floor you. From the screenshots you may have seen it does have its high points and they outweigh the low. It looks clean and smooth – which can not be said about the frame rate. It chugs along harshly like a dying creature, hacking and coughing as it does so. You can literally feel its suffering and its painful. The technological problems really limit the game and cut it short of what it could have been.

The animations are fluid and better then most games in its class but somewhere along the line something just went wrong. You can see it, it is distracting, and it takes away from the game. The official company line is that this is a problem with “Older 360 Units” which, even if it is 100% true, is not a good answer.

Two Worlds is also more complicated then the average hack and slash. Final Fantasy and Diablo are child’s play compared to the confusing statistic screens in this game. This is not a problem after some time spent learning it (lest we forget how confusing Final Fantasy X and XII’s leveling screens were the first time) and it is another testament in the long line of examples of how the game aimed too high.

All hope is not lost, though, the game has online multiplayer. You and a friend can team up in co-op and fight through quests in the world. It isn’t a persistent world like World of Warcraft, but it gets the job done. It is more like Crackdown where you join someone else’s game and play though. Whatever changes stay changed and the experience is a good one. The saving grace for this game could very well be the chance to play it with other people.

It is not a bad game, it really, really isn't. When playing you will feel like you are playing a really good game with a lot of problems. It was stunted by hardware issues that just flat out killed it. The characters are interesting, the graphics are pretty, the controls are comfortable, but it feels like it just isn't finished. If Two Worlds was a demo it would fly high, because it feels like an incomplete demo. However the feeling of regret will soak in once you realize that no, this isn't a demo, it is a $60.00 game. Worth a buy? No, I wouldn't recommend it. Worth a rent?
