Unused "Childkiller" Vault Boy Image from Fallout 2 Revealed

Wham! Pow! Straight to the Moon!

Kids can be a pain. In Fallout 2, they'd sometimes attack players if they didn't like the way they were treating townsfolk. An allowed reaction was to blow them to pieces, thus earning the player the "Childkiller" reputation. It was a punishment, and made just about everyone know that you were the worst person alive. Just as was the case with every other perk, the Childkiller reputation needed a Vault Boy image, and illustrator Brian Menze was tasked with doing picture it. Above is the result.

This never-before-released image was the only Vault Boy image cut from Fallout 2, and recently, Menze released a statement on what made him create the controversial image.

“This image was unused and the only Vault Boy image to ever be cut from Fallout 2. (I'm sure you can figure out why) I remember when I got the request to do a perk illustration for "child Killer" that there would be no way to keep in from being offensive. I mean really! How do you make an illustration of "child killer" and keep it from being offensive? Anyway for some reason, I thought this was the least offensive way to do it. I have no idea what i was thinking. Even the designer who requested it realized it was a bad idea, so we nixed it. Looking back on it now, I can't believe I drew this.”

I can't help but chuckle at this image, half because it's remarkably inappropriate, and half because it's equally hilarious. As he says, there's really no way to keep it from being offensive, and as the saying goes, "go big or go home." The image they ended up going with was an evil looking Vault Boy being thrown out of a town, which sort of works, but not as much as this cut image does.

He says that it was the least offensive way to do it, which makes me wonder what he considered would be offensive. Then again, I'm not sure what stopped him from just having the Vault Boy talking to a kid and hiding a knife behind his back. I mean, it's no kick to the baby bump, but it would get the point across...
