Counter-Strike is the undisputed king of competitive first-person-shooters. Despite what anyone may say about Call of Duty 4, Halo, or Gears of War, Counter-Strike has more active users and is played more on the competitive scene then anything else. It has a massive following, with thousands of dedicated servers for Counter-Strike: Source and even the older version, 1.6, having a dedicated community. Recently, Gametrailers TV had the chance to walk around in Valve studios and bother everyone there about unreleased titles.

It was made very clear that they had absolutely no intentions of releasing any information on Counter-Strike 2 at this time, but the host of Gametrailers TV was impossibly persistent in getting anything they would give. It seems, if you watch the clip, that he was eventually dragged from Gabe Newell (who seemed to slowly grow annoyed) and forced to talk to someone else who let some small details fly. Nothing big, but he did talk about the different options they have when it comes to a Counter-Strike sequel. Currently, the plan is to constantly update it with more content and balancing issues like a Massive Multiplayer Online title, supporting people who have already purchased it with semi-regular patches to make it more enjoyable.

The other option they may pursue, which seems more likely in the long term according to the Valve employee, is to tear it down and begin anew, not unlike the approach they took to Team Fortress 2. This doesn’t mean making it cartoony or goofy (though I would kill to see Counter-Strike in the Team Fortress style), just having nothing taboo and making anything a possibility with the new version. This is a risky move and could leave them with plenty of upset fans, but knowing Valve, they will not screw it up.
