Not many game reviewers would call their jobs easy. We have the chance to play many games and express our views on it as a work of art in hopes of helping those who are still unsure of a games quality, and in that aspect the work is very satisfying. However, there are times as a reviewer that the job is actually painful.

My trek through Vampire Rain is my first time with such an experience. Never before has a game brought so little to the table as Vampire Rain. Horror and stealth go hand in hand for many reasons. Horror relies on keeping players on their toes not unlike a stealth game, and stealth butters horror’s bread by giving the players the ability to hide from whatever is the games horror.

Vampire Rain fails horribly in blending the two genres and what is left is a traumatic experience that I would wish upon no one. I am going to dissect some of the things that I believe make the game one of the worst I have ever played, this review will be a little on the long side because my pure, utter hatred for this heaping pile of shit can not go un-noted and can not be abridged.

Just let them kill you…it’s easier that way.

There are several ways to make a game difficult, seen most simply when a games difficulty is turned from easy to hard. Some games add more difficult enemies that are harder to hit and make better decisions. Other games give the enemies more hit points and make them do stupid amounts of damage that make the game bad instead of fun.

Vampire Rain is harder than it ever, ever needed to be. I do not say this as a frustrated gamer who couldn’t play a game, I say this as a gamer who didn’t feel like playing this game. You do not fight against the vampires as much as you fight against horrible game design. Vampire Rain doesn’t stop there, it also exhibits one of the worst examples of trial and error gameplay I have ever seen in a video game.

The best example of this is the fact that the game designers actually felt like they should give the player a weapon to start off the game. To the untrained eye, this may seem like a good thing, but for someone who just got done playing Vampire Rain, it is revealed to actually be a trick. Sure you have a gun, but don’t dare shoot at a vampire. Why? Because they will fucking kill you – that’s why. Sneaking up on an enemy and shooting them directly in the back of the head will result in them spinning around and killing you at mind-bending speeds.

Now I know what you are saying: “Coop! They are vampires! They are supposed to be hard!” Yeah, I know they are supposed to be hard. I would even admit that a traditional bullet from a traditional gunshot into their head might not kill them. But why give me a traditional gun with traditional bullets? As the game progresses more weapons are unlocked that actually give you a chance of killing the occasional Night Walker. Machine guns, sniper rifles, shotguns, and even a nifty one-hit-kill knife work its way into the mix the more you play. If these weapons exist, which I know they do because the main character’s squad mates all seem to start with them, why doesn’t the main character begin the game with something better than a pea shooter?

Speaking of squad mates… The other members of your party are completely ridiculous. Every stereotype of a traditional crappy horror movie is filled including the tough black guy, the new guy who barely knows what he is doing, the girl who is out to prove she is just as tough as the guys, and the main character with a mysterious past. The script for the game is one that puts all other bad game scripts to shame. This would be funny if it weren’t so obvious that it was not intentional.

I could have been all fancy with video editing, but it would have detracted from the pure crap this game is.

Oh, and the night vision. The night vision works like it is supposed to and shares a battery with your “Night Walker Detector.” The problem is, the battery on the vision is under 10 seconds. Why the hell am I using AA batteries to fight vampires? This doesn’t make any sense. The multiplayer is also just as bad as the single player. I was lucky enough to find someone to play the game with (who shared the hatred for it with me as well) and in under an hour I had 500 achievement points. If I were to pick one single redeeming factor of the game, it would be that it has easy achievement points. That is it.

The graphics are terrible, the gameplay is terrible, and everything about this game bleeds horrible. Honestly, I could go on for another few hours and it may seem like I am babbling already. Vampire Rain sent me through a loop that just made me annoyed and I can barely write it out. This game pissed me off to no end, but I will just do the one thing I can to get back at it.
