Name: Jam Sessions
Genre: Simulation
Platform: Nintendo DS

Jam Sessions isn’t a game in the same way that Halo or Mario Kart are games. Hell, it isn’t even a game in the way Guitar Hero is a game. Jam Sessions is a guitar on the Nintendo DS. To review it as one would review a typical game is a fallacy and shouldn’t be taken with any merit.

That said, no one should ever buy Jam Sessions without first playing it. It isn’t a purchase that will grow on someone – either you like it or you don’t. It is a hard task to define what type of person would enjoy a game such as this. On the one hand there are people who already play the guitar. Would this person want to own Jam Sessions? If they are the type of person who is disgusted at the idea of Guitar Hero like so many guitar players are then no, odds are they will not enjoy this game.

But, then again, there is always the chance that they would enjoy it more due to its striking similarity to the actual instrument. A wave of euphoria could wash over the player as he strums the virtual screen and plays songs he would normally need to weild an instrument to play before realizing that he is indeed holding an instrument. Instead of being made of wood and metal it is made of plastics. Instead of picking at strings he is brushing lightly against a screen. The ability to play a guitar anywhere without limitations could be appealing…

But what of the people who don’t care about wanting to learn guitar? The rhythm gamer who scoffed at our (insert link hurr pluz) Guitar Hero II Tournament because every round wasn’t on expert and the players were allowed to use their hands. Is this the game for them?

Again, hard to say. Jam Sessions doesn’t hold your hand with color coded noted and bubblegum songs that can be followed by anyone with a beat.

"You are the artist," it speaks. You push it back and doubt your early, music played by you created by you. Is this what has been missing from the hours spend playing Woman, Thunderhorse and Strudder? True creationism that would make even artists smile and wonder if their medium will be the next one to be brought digital.

And what of the people who don’t meet any of the above criteria? The casual gamer or child who bought a DS for their Pokemon fix and nothing else – would they want to buy Jam Sessions?

There is no way to tell what niche the game fulfills. No true way to grasp this unless it is you, whatever qualifications you may find yourself crawling into, strumming along to a song you wrote and wondering exactly what I have spent the last week wondering: what is this game? How the hell can I review a guitar?
