Wii/PSP Silent Hill Remake Rumor Gains Validity

Or At Least the BBFC Seems to Think So

by Coop

The British Board of Film Classification (ESRB of the UK) either loves to add steam to rumors, or knows something we don't about a remake of Silent Hill. They've rated the game, giving it a BBCF 15 rating, which is, you know, what a Silent Hill game gets rated over there.

There's a description given as well, and it sounds unmistakably Silent Hill-y:

SILENT HILL is a horror / survival game that is played from the third person perspective. It was originally released on the Sony PlayStation in 1999. The player assumes the role of Harry Mason, a writer who has visited the town of Silent Hill with his young daughter, Cheryl. Following a car crash Harry regains consciousness to discover that Cheryl is missing. The purpose of the game is to navigate Harry through the playing environment in search of his lost daughter. The game was passed ‘15’ for strong violence.

The BBFC Guidelines at ‘12’ state that violence must not dwell on detail and that there should be no emphasis on injuries or blood. As Harry wanders through the playing environment he encounters a succession of monsters and zombies. He is initially armed with a knife and a handgun but he acquires other weapons (i.e. a shotgun and a hunting rifle) during the course of the game. Stabbing, clubbing or shooting monsters or zombies produces blood spurts (sometimes purple coloured in the case of monsters) and we see blood on the ground from time to time. Harry himself can sustain bloody injuries and be killed. The emphasis on blood was a little too strong for ‘12’ but comfortably contained at ‘15’. It proved impossible to mutilate or otherwise inflict post-mortem damage on fallen adversaries.

The language in SILENT HILL, which includes terms such as 'hell', 'damn', 'pissed' and 'screwing' (non-sexual), would have been acceptable at ‘PG’.

You know, Silent Hill.

They don't go around re-rating games from the past, so we can pretty much treat this as at least a pseudo-confirmation, if not a flat-out admission. It wouldn't be the first Silent Hill game on the PSP, and with Konami looking to find some way to pay the bills in-between Metal Gear titles remaking their PSX horror title might be the fastest cash-in they have.

I've got NO problem with Wii ports of survival/horror/suspense games. RE4 for the Wii was great and the GC thrillers were great, back in the day, too. I would give a Silent Hill port a rent at the least.
