Wii Sports Outsells Super Mario Bros.
Over 40,000,000 Served

VGChartz is reporting that Nintendo's Wii Sports has sold 280k more copies than Super Mario Bros., the previous best selling game ever, and that the new king of game sales now sits at just over 40.5 million copies shipped. Before anyone jumps to defend the defeated beast, reminding everyone of the obvious "Wii Sports comes bundled" fact, remember that Super Mario Bros. did as well, and shipped with every single NES sold.
VGChartz isn’t exactly the most, um, prestigious website on the internetz, and these numbers aren’t really entirely official or anything like that, but hey, it was bound to happen sooner or later. The generation is about halfway over, so does that mean Wii Sports will hit 100+ million sales by the time Wiii comes out, or has Nintendo's wagglebox hit a wall? Only time will tell, but we can expect to see Wii Sports at the top of the charts for a good long while before any new game mounts a serious challenge. Then again, 50 Cent: Blood in the Sand is only a few months away.

Holy shit, almost every title is from Nintendo. Remember the days when Nintendo was known for awesome, quality games that you would enjoy for life?
Actually, this list is pretty depressing, now that I think about it. I'm going to go mope in a corner.
In its own respect, Wii Sports is just as great as SMB. Just think of the importance they each have for their respective console and generation. With the video game industry broadening as it is, it was only a matter of time.
Will it hit the 10 million mark? Maybe. Sales will decline eventually, but I think Nintendo still has plenty of aces left in its sleeves to ensure more consoles find homes.
I'm with J-Man - Wii Sports was a damn good title. It didn't do too much, and it didn't really have to. Still, these numbers are rather suspect. I mean... hell... SMB has a twenty year head start.

Wii Sports is included with a Wii correct? If it is then why is this a shock?
Because SMB was bundled with the NES, too; so a pack-in beat another one. Quite a feat.
i think this might just be a tale of different times. Now everyone and their grandmother wants a wii, i don't believe the NES had the same wide appeal at the time. I know people who are not gamers at all who own a wii, so i guess yea it really is not that surprising.
