On top of that, an expansion was also released containing the Aldrin Missions, adding new ships and missions to the game, expanding the amount of content in the title. It's easiest to describe X3 as a sim that feels like it was inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Moving from one location to another is unbelievably time consuming, even when using the game's "fast forward" command. It feels in many ways like an MMORPG without an online component, but with as much emphasis on exploring and communicating.

There's crafting, multiple ships to purchase and pilot, and a massive, beautiful universe. The attention to detail is paramount, and if your computer can handle the game's technical demands it's one of the best looking space titles. It's easy to become immersed in the game, floating through space and controlling a vessel as it flies through the darkness. Not as easy, however, is learning the game's controls, which requires pseudo-memorization of the game's 100+ page instruction manual. The developers didn't try to make an accessible title; rather, they made it as detailed and in-depth as they could, and invited gamers, if they felt it wise, to come visit outer space.

While The Aldrin Missions supply plenty of new content for fans of X3 it is in no way an invitation for newcomers. The new ships, missions, and additional content all give a deeper experience, but just as it was when it was released, X3 remains an incredibly hardcore experience. It requires patience. It requires tenacity. It demands ability to play the computer keyboard at a Keith Emerson level. No one will say that there's a lack of content in the game, there is plenty to do in X3, but to get to any of it you must play through a tenacious, monotonous, and overly-complicated few hours. Eventually you'll be speeding (in a sense) around the galaxy in any one of the game's many ships and enjoying what might be the most realistic simulation of space, but getting there is a bit difficult.

There's reward at the end of the tunnel for learning the mechanics, but they aren't accessible for most people. Terran Conflict might be the definition of a hardcore, niche title. For some people, it's a dream come true, and the Aldrin Missions are an extension of that. For others, it's needlessly complicated and the antithesis of an intuitive experience, and definitely needs to be tried before a purchase.
