Turning Point: Fall Of Liberty - Lost In The Shuffle (Taken from my weplaythis.com blog 3/8/08)
World War 2 Is So 2002

I had read about Turning Point a while ago and was immediately excited about it. I love history and especially love WW2 crap but I was way over the gaming experience of the war through the various Medal Of Honors and Call Of Doodies. The idea of there being a twist in events and the Nazis bringing the war to our doorstep is simply awesome. From there I went out to pre-order this game and eagerly awaited its release. When I got the game I ended up spending and extra 5 dollars for the cool tin that comes with the soundtrack and the alternate timeline of events which is really cool and thought out. Then I played it. I hadn't even bothered with the demo because I still have the demos for Tomb Raider, Monster Madness, and Turok which I never bothered to actually play so I really just threw myself into this game.
I have since seen all the reviews popping up about this game and have really come to the conclusion that as a gamer a sort of hate other gamers. Every now and then you get someone with a good head on their shoulders but most people seem to have no idea of how to look at things or at least that's my opinion.

Although the idea of an altered history changing future events, Nazi Germany invading America, leads to an interesting premise, Turning Point is a mediocre FPS at best. Graphics are X-box first generation, and the weapon detection is spotty. Find a used copy of CoD 4 instead.

It doesn't seem like the story in this game would be very compelling. It didn't really attract me when I heard you are a construction worker, and all of a sudden you turn into a amazing fighter, killing machine. From the looks of the videos I've watched, it doesn't look like the graphics and AI are too top of the line for the majority of the 360 being released lately. And last but not least, how many WWII games do we need? Especially one that is made up saying that the United States is being invaded by Germany, and Hitler trying to run us. Doesn't sound like a good game to me...
These are two of many reviews that I'll just use for the sake of using.
A few things come to mind. First, it's a game, so why would an idea like an alternate take on history be out of place in a world of quality games like Ninjabread Man and Cabela's Safari for those who can't wait till next hunting season. PS if you are a hunter...well I'd like hunt you. Pricks. Anyway it's only a game so get off the high horse and stop looking for reality because it's outside if you want that.
Second, graphically this game is just fine. Everyone is pissin' and moanin' that it is last-gen graphics and I don't know. I don't really care either because it's just fine to me and they're no worse than anything on Orange Box or half of the other games on the 360. The one issue that I can at least agree with is faulty controls and yet after a level or two I got used to them and was fine with it. The look sensitivity totally blows in that setting it to medium is retardedly slow and fast can sometimes fly past what you're aiming at, not to mention the speeds on the y-axis and x-axis are timed unevenly. Other than that you can't honestly complain about anything.
Finally, well just how many WW2 games do we need? I mean seriously. Let's get to modern times and do stuff like create Iron Man in Iraq so that the kiddies will get it. That's not fucking stupid or anything. Is that really an issue though? Don't want a WW2 game well don't buy it but honestly I don't see the difference between Madden 2000 to 2008. Same game, different name. Besides, Madden 93 is way better than any of those and NFL Quarterback Club 98 is better than that. There is a huge market on putting out the SAME DAMN GAME EVERY YEAR for football, basketball, soccer, and sometimes baseball. I can buy one and be fine for a decade. You can do the same with your Wargame hating ways if you'd like.
I just don't see how it is that those who were around for video games of years passed can nitpick about any little issue in a game. I'll mention the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for the NES. Everyone owned it and everyone played it again and again but there are very few people who were really good at it and to be honest well the game does kind of suck. At the time we didn't have the internet and there was really only Nintendo Power and while they did review games they didn't rate them and why would they since it any Nintendo game sold is good for them and Nintendo Power never had a bad game in it...
The point is Turtles is a classic game at this point and why is it exactly that this happened? Well because even though we were frustrated as hell we got over it and popped the game back in. So if a game might not look as great as Bioshock or have the exact same control and ease as Call Of Duty 4 (which is so not game of the year worthy) well remember where we came from and just get the*Censored* over it!
This game is really, really fun and the story is pretty awesome. You are basically a construction worker on a NYC high rise when you see the zeppelins come out of the clouds. You are literally on the steel beams of a skyscraper hundreds of feet up and you then make your way down to safety and on the way grapple with a Nazi who has just landed from a parachute jump and you grab his gun. The invasion level is just one totally awesome part after another with the exception of the repeated tanks and zeppelins at the barricades. You eventually make your way from NYC to DC to rescue a general in captivity and retake the White House. Along the way you get the usual variety of weapons, the night vision sniper was my favorite, and go through a number of environments you would expect from a city game like this: buildings, alleys, subway, sewer, etc. There is a multiplayer portion to the game that I haven't ventured into yet but I would imagine it being even more fun that the single player combat because there would be a bit more challenge in the non AI enemies.
If you can get past being a whiny "it's not perfect so it sucks" gamer then you'll probably have fun with this game.
Comments
I agree!
This game should have been awesome. I was hoping it was going to be a WWII type Freedom Fighters.
I normally go big in for the WWII alternate-history stuff...
but the demo of this underwhelmed me to say the least.
At least they gave us WWII game with a twist
Upon further playing the only severe flaw I noticed in this game is the unplayable multiplayer. To start, you can only do death match or team death match limiting you from more enjoyable game types. It also takes about 500 bullets to actually kill someone else AND they have taken away the melee option for up close kills that is available in the single player game. WTF. I still stand by that the story is fine though and deserves a better chance.
