Getting Pumped: Twisted Metal: HOETE

Yes it has a long title!

by Dominic

Did you happen to miss Twisted Metal: Head-on when it released on PSP? Well if you did you're not the only one. For the most part, I love the Twisted Metal series. I remember riding my bike to a friend's house all through-out the summer just to play the Twisted Metal demo. It was unlike anything I had ever played. So when I heard Twisted Metal was being developed for PSP, I instantly wanted a PSP. But it just didn't seem like a good enough reason to dump $250 at the time. But now I have a second chance.

Sure, I could go pick up Head-on now that I own a PSP, but why would I want to do that when Twisted Metal: Head-on Extra Twisted Edition releases next week on February 5th!?  And for the budget friendly price of only $20!

TM:HOETE is a port to the PS2.  But if you haven't heard, this isn't just your everyday simple port. It has 4 new levels from the never released Twisted Metal Black 2 along with new game modes, exclusive characters and stuffed with bonus features.

Bonus features include original concept art, a Twisted Metal documentary and the never-before seen video endings from Twisted Metal 1 (technically not true, there was a code to see Sweet Tooth's on a PS underground disc. Yes, I'm a complete nerd and remember this). You'll acquire some of the bonus features from completing some of the new game modes, or by playing the new Sweet Tour mode where you take a 3rd person perspective of Sweet Tooth and find bonus content. Now that doesn't sound like the most thrilling game mode ever created, but it seems to be an entertaining method of viewing some bonus material.  Earlier today, Jaffe posted a little trailer for the documentry on his blog:

There also appears to be some strange story surrounding the development of the 4 unreleased levels. According to the video included at the top of this interview, six key members of the development team for Twisted Metal: Harbor City (aka Black 2) were killed in a plane crash. Harbor City was then canned. Two years later a letter arrived at Sony, asking them to release the content developed for Harbor City. The letter was then signed by the fallen team members. It was eventually decided that the note was just a cruel joke. Sounds a little too urban legend like to me. I can't find any information surrounding these claims so I can only assume that it's a viral stunt for the game's release, but I can't say for sure. If you complete the game's Lost Mode on hard you'll be able to view the note in it's entirety. Check out the video in the supplied link for the full story accompanied by eerie music.  Jaffe states in the interview that Eat Sleep Play's next game is hidden in the game.

On a final note, check out the hands-on impression provided by Gamespot for some more details.

So are you pumped for this game now?

I think out of all the games my brother and I played for the PS1; Only Final Fantasy 7 took more of a beating than Twisted Metal 2
