What began in arcades with Beatmania and Dance Dance Revolution has now made its way so mainstream that it’s impossible to turn on the television without seeing Al Roker playing Guitar Hero or Conan O’Brien jamming to Rock Band. This year saw several new iterations of previous franchises, like Rock Band 2 perfecting what was done in 2007 and Guitar Hero adding drums, a microphone, and being released for both cell phones and the Nintendo DS. Sadly, for many of these games, it was more of the same, and even Guitar Hero’s additions felt more like expansions than inventive titles.

But there was one game that broke the flow, and it was from an entirely unexpected source.
