2008 Sports Game of the Year

Gamervision's 2008 "Best Ever" Awards

by Gamervision

Normally there are two “Best Sports Game” winners every year; one for team sports and one for individual sports.  This year, however, saw very few quality titles in the individual category and several excellent team games.  As a result, we’ve combined the two into a single category covering any and all sports games.  With EA’s resurgence in the hoops department, we saw a neck and neck battle for basketball supremacy between NBA Live 09 and NBA 2K9.  Not to be outdone by their hardwood counterparts, EA also delivered the best football game in years with Madden NFL 09, and maybe the most polished and satisfying golf simulator ever in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09.  For those with a taste for a more stylized golf experience, Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds offered a fun, fast-paced alternative.  Even tennis fans were well served in 2009, as Top Spin 3 offered a realistic and challenging take on the sport.  Finally, Sony staked their claim as the makers of the best baseball game on the market with MLB 08: The Show.

Even with all these quality offerings, one game stood head and shoulders above the rest, and is truly deserving of our Best Sports Game of 2008.

Madden was really good this year, but can't hold a candle to all the amazing features that NHL implemented. I hope Madden takes some notes and tries adding the robust multiplayer mode featured in this game.

I only just played NHL 09 for the first time on New Year's Eve. Don' get me wrong - I've seen it in action a bunch before, just never got the "hands-on" time in. Having now played it - SO GOOD!
