Preview - Epson MovieMate 85HD and 62

Party in a Box

by Geoff Morrison

Epson has been making excellent projectors at reasonable prices for years. Their MovieMate line has built in speakers and DVD player for everything you need for a movie night, indoors or out.

 Epson MovieMate 85HD

With everything built into the unit, for movies, all you'd need is the disc and a wall or a sheet. Oh, and a really long extension cord. There's also a USB and HDMI input, so if you want to plug in your computer, PS3, 360 or whatever, you can do that too.

Both projectors are of the 3LCD variety, meaning they use three small LCD panels (red, green and blue) and a crazy bright bulb to create an image. This technology doesn't create an image quite as good as DLP or LCOS (the main technological competition) but it's close and LCD is usually much cheaper.

The stereo speakers are powered by 10 watts each. There's even a microphone input, if you're into the whole karaoke thing.

The 85HD has a resolution of 1,280 by 800, slightly higher than 720p HD. Epson's claims of light output are rather confusing, but it seems like they'll be bright enough for a 100-inch image with little problem. The lens is quite wide as well, as they say you can project a 60-inch image from only 6 feet from the screen/wall. The MovieMate 62 has 540p resolution.

The MovieMate 85HD will be $899 and the MovieMate 62 $649 when they become available later this month.

If you don't need the built in DVD player and speakers, you can likely get better overall performance elsewhere, but for the features and the price these kick ass.
