Mini-Mini Studio Monitors (For Your Desk)

by Geoff Morrison

Genelec has long been known as a maker of incredible studio monitors for recording studios and mixing rooms. They've been making smaller speakers for the home for about 8 years. The 6010A is a desktop system for computers that has a bunch of features you'd expect with such pedigree.

The 6010A's are a two-way powered speaker with a 0.75-inch tweeter and 3-inch midrange/woofer driven by individual 12-watt amplifiers. The amplifiers are matched to the drivers and there's an active crossover. The cabinet is die-cast aluminum. The tweeter is in a waveguide (Directivity Control Waveguide, in Genelec's parlance) that should help smooth out off-axis response (how the speakers sound when you're not directly in front of them).

Genelec claims a frequency response of 74 Hz to 18 kHz, ±2.5 dB, which is a strong boast. A maximum output of 102 dB is really impressive.

To go with the 6010As is the 5040A subwoofer. A single 6.5-inch woofer is driven by a 40-watt amplifier. Frequency response is 35-85 ±3 dB.

The 6010A/5040A system has RCA and 1/8th stereo inputs, so it can work with a computer, iPod/portable music player, or pretty much anything else. The sub is built to work with up to five 6010As in case you want a full surround system.

Such over-engineering doesn't come cheap, though. The 6010As are $375 each, while the 5040A sub is $750.
