Preview - KEF T Series Flat Speakers

Flat is the new Skinny

by Geoff Morrison

British speaker company KEF has announced their new T Series speakers, which are about as thin as a speaker can be at 1.4 inches.

KEF T101

The T101 and T101c ("c" for center) satellite speakers have a 1-inch tweeter and 4.5-inch low profile woofer. It's this latter that's really impressive. KEF claims the performance of the woofer is the same as a conventional driver, but it's just a little over an inch deep. That's about a third the depth of a regular driver. The T101s are $500 for a pair or $250 each.

KEF T301

The larger T301 and T301c satellites have the same tweeter and two of the thin woofers. These have a higher claimed output than the T101s, and as such are better suited for larger rooms. The T301 and T301c are $700 for a pair or $350 each.

The frequency response for all the satellites is a claimed 80Hz - 30kHz. The claimed maximum output is 107 dB for the T101 and 110 dB for the T301.

To go with the satellites is the T-2 sub, which has its own slim profile and a 10-inch woofer powered by a 250-watt Class D amplifier.

KEF T105 System

There are several system packages being sold to make ordering easier. The T105 System is four T101s, a T101c, and a T-2 sub for $1,500 (shown above). The T205 System replaces the front three speakers with two T301s and a T301c for a total of $1,800.  The T305 (shown below) is four T301s, one T301c and the T-2 sub for $2,000. There are floor and desktop stands available.

The T Series is undeniably cool looking, and as they're from KEF they likely sound pretty good too.
