Preview - New Sony Projector
SXRD (Sexerd?)
Sony has announced the VPL-VWPRO1, a 1080p SXRD (LCOS) projector priced to compete with the JVC models also announced recently.
The VPL-VWPRO1 has a claimed 1,300 ANSI lumens of brightness and a contrast ratio of 85,000:1.
That contrast ratio is achieved using an auto iris, which increases or decreases the total amount of light on the screen depending on what is being shown in the content. A dark scene, for example, will cause the iris to close, making it seem like the projector has a better black level.
Historically, Sony SXRD projectors have been fantastic. At $3,400 the VPL-VWPRO1 will likely give similar performance to the $10,000+ Sony projectors from just a few year ago. It even ships with an additional lamp (about $400 in its own right).
The VPL-VWPRO1 will be available in early October.
Also announced was the $10,000 VPL-VW90ES which is 3D capable, 120 Hz, and has a claimed contrast ratio of 150,000:1.
