Top 5 Games That Should Be Remade

Time to Redo Some Brilliance

by Geoff Morrison

A few weeks back I let you know which were the best games from days gone by that have no modern comparison. But with all the sequels, remakes and reboots saturating the market and tugging at our nostalgia, how about remaking some good games?

5) Subwar 2050 (1993, PC, Amiga)

Think of it as a flight sim, but under water. Subwar 2050 took a unique idea and executed it well. Similar games like Sub Culture and Archimedean Dynasty also explored the underwater action concept. But very little has been done since then.

4) Interstate '76 (1997, PC)

The vehicular combat, and all around badass, game Interstate '76 was one of the most fun games to come out in the late 90's. The sequel, Interstate '82, suffered the usual fate when a fantastic game is dumbed down by people who don't know what they're doing. As in, it sucked.

From the customizable cars, to the quazi-realistic handling, to one of the best video game soundtracks ever, Interstate '76 was fantastic. Sadly, the graphics don't hold up too well. A remake or a reboot of this franchise would surely be welcomed. Sadly, it would likely take the form of Vigilante 8 or similar arcadey crap.

3) Sonic the Hedgehog (1991, Sega)

Now I know there have been countless Sonic games since the original, but in just about everyone's opinion, they got progressively worse. Our own 00.19 gave Sonic Unleashed a 5 last year.

The problem, as I see it, is that the original game was good because it was a side-scroller, not in spite of it. In the effort to be "hip" with those neeto 3D graphics, they're missing what made the original great. For those of us wanting to play Sonic we want to play Sonic, not STUN Runner.

How about Sonic the Hedgehog, as a shot for shot remake with modern graphics and more importantly, HD resolutions. Sort of, but not quite entirely unlike this.

2) Planetside (PC, 2003)

Ok, technically you can still play this one. But the graphics are rather dated and there aren't a lot of people playing. Some other games, like MAG have gone down a similar path, but the fact is there aren't really any FPSMMOs. It was the scope of Planetside that gave it its niche.

There is some hope though, Sony is apparently in the early stages of developing a new Planetside game. So we shall see...

1) Space Quest (1986, PC, Mac, Apple II, Amiga, Atari)

Most of the games on this list, I'm advocating an update to the original game, with better graphics and so on. Overall not much change to the fundamental game. With Space Quest, I think a full-on change to first person 3-D would be brilliant. There are so few funny games, the last probably being No One Lives Forever (another game worthy of a remake). Imagine wandering around space as Roger Wilco. Imagine a 3-D interactive Arcada. The later Myst games proved that you could have a puzzle/adventure game in first person, why not Space Quest?

I'd like to see Fantastic Dizzy remade in HD. Or maybe an entirely new 3D adventure.

Psycho Fox is another game i'd like to see fresh life breathed into. Seriously, there needs to be more games that allow you to play as a hippopotamus.

Well, Sonic is gonna be fine. Sonic Colors is a genuinely awesome game, that's like 75% 2.5D. More Sonic fans should definitely play it. And I feel like Sonic 4 will improve a lot since Dimps is doing it; Sonic Advance was pretty lame, but Sonic Advance 2 was amazing. Since Sonic 4 is episodic, I expect some pretty big refinements for Episode 2.

But the other ones? Some good suggestions. Nice to see a list like this that doesn't just go for easy/lazy answers, like saying Road Rash again. AquaNox is probably one of the last underwater games I can think of, and even those games are already on GOG. It's been too long for those.

But Interstate '76? Wasn't that basically Mechwarrior with cars? A sim like that sounds awful, not to mention those visuals are already perfectly retro for a game set in 1976. Might as well leave that one alone. A spiritual successor, I have nothing against. But a genuine, contemporary boxed product with the name "Interstate '76" on it, I do not wanna see.
