Comix Zone - Continue?

And Here Comes The Comic Crash

by Hey_Nick_Murphy

Series Continue?

Hey, remember the 90's?  Man, everything was so good then.  Good music, good movies, good video games, good comics... yeah kind of.  Then they made a video game about comics in the 90's.  It was more over the top than Over The Top.  Enjoy the adventures of Sketch Tunner! Who is that?  Who cares.

Every week on Continue?, we sit people down to play a random old school game for 45 minutes. We're talking NES, SNES, Genesis old here. There is one question we are trying to answer - do we want to stop playing or continue?

    StarTropics!

Comix Zone is hard as shit though. Only got to play it on the Genesis Collection but I remember as a kid thinking this game was some kind of holy grail that I never got my hands on.

There is a game i want you to play because it was my all time favourite as a kid, (SMASH TV) i played it on the genesis and dont know if it was on any other console ... i played this game to death, but could never beat it, every weekend me and my younger brother would spend hours trying to beat it (i blame never being able to beat it on him) i was so kick ass at this game (favourite weapon, spread gun WITH the double shot orb). I will be most upset if you guys dont review this game ... once again SMASH TV! PLAY IT!

I enjoyed the hell out of this game! And Paul, I don't know what you're talking about with not continuing passed the second level. I've beaten it in as little as [under] twenty minutes.

Oh well. You should play it again. It's a lot of fun.

I'm sorry, but you guys are horrible at Comix Zone. For starters, you don't punch everything- you take out your rat and he sniffs out things you can use to get through parts of the game... like at the beginning of the second scene of the game, he sniffs out dynamite you can use on the door instead of wasting a quarter of your life punching it. You're seriously telling me three thirty year old men can't beat a game that a single eight year old boy can? You guys suck.

Shattercross, eat it dude. This game is a beat em up foremost so my instinct when I played it on the Genesis Collection was to punch the shit out of everything too. Sorry we all can't be super studs from the 90's like you.

Make it to like the 3rd level and you'll get to this arena level and theres this like huge supply of enemies you have to kill... Very difficult

Oh man, continue FOR SURE. Comix Zone is easily one of the best games on the Genesis. Beating that game was one of the more frustrating gaming experiences in my life, but one of the most satisfying. Though I will say this: you HAVE to rock the 6-button controller for this, or you stand a rather large disadvantage.

Oh yeah, and some other notes:

Yes, you only have one life to start, but you get an extra life every time you advance to a new issue. The game is comprised of 3 issues, each one 2 pages long. A page is a "level", so there's basically 6 levels to the game, with a possibility of having a stock of 3 lives.

Just punching stuff randomly will hurt you, but there are actually a wide variety of attacks and special moves to choose from. You can avoid taking damage depending on the combinations of attacks you use in the situation you happen to be in. It helps if you have the manual.

As far as memories of the game go...don't know if anyone else remembers this, but the original Genesis cartridge came with a CD sampler from American Recordings. There were something like 12 or 13 random songs by bands with that label. There was a Danzig track, and I believe something by Love And Rockets. Everything else was fairly obscure. It came free with the game, and it was actually the second CD I ever owned.

Image did kinda suck in their early days, although Spawn did and still does reign supreme.

I'd love to see you guys play StarTropics. Best NES game hands-down.
