Avalon Code Demo on Nintendo Channel
I never played anything like it...
by J-Man
For those out there who haven't deleted the Channel yet, there's a worthwhile DS demo on there this week. It's Avalon Code, developped by Matrix Software and brought to North America by Marvelous Entertainment and XSEED Games, both of which I'm starting love more with each passing game.
The basic premise is that your charaacter ends up having a book that can record informationin it as you literally slam it against objects, enemies and even friendly NPCs. Here's the twist: each object/NPC has certain elements attached to it, which can then be removed and replaced to alter their properties.
For example, you start with a rusted sword as your weapon. In the book, it shows that there is an "ILL" element to it. Once you remove it, then it becomes a normal copper sword. You get to scan a flower early on and it has a fire property to it. By now, you should have understood how the game works: take the fire and put it on your sword to add fire damage to your attacks!
When you encounter a Goblin, scan it to realise that it has Iron in it, boosting its defence. I swapped out the Iron (put it on my sword to make it stronger) and put in the Ill I removed earlier: the newly-created Sickly Goblins could not stand a chance.
The game has tons of potential once you start screwing around a bit; I created a Fiery Copper Goblin. Boy, was that hard to kill. The previews are currently positive, stating that you can even alter the story and possibly create romances or rivalries just by screwing around with everything's and everybody's elements.
It's ambitious, it's new and it comes out next week. I'm getting it and I wouldn't be spreading the word if I didn't think it wasn't worth it.

Wow that sounds really fun and interesting. Can't believe I hadn't heard anything about this. I assume, from your description, that it is a turn-based RTS of sorts?
Sorry I forgot to mention: It's closer to an action RPG than anything else. It's all in real-time. You get to explore areas, talk to people, crawl in dungeons and kill baddies. Pretty much standard fare.
Like that I put turn-based real time strategy? Proof reading is essential.
I got the RPG vibe just wasn't sure if it was action or turn-based. Sound fun, either way.
Do you know if there is any multiplayer or wi-fi functionality?
The Wi-Fi logo's on the box, but no info as to what modes are included...
This is relevant to my interests.
