Left4d20
Prologue: Flight!
by J-Man
So you're all now well aware of how the game is played and whatnot, but here's a quick recap and an update:
Four Player Characters are the witnesses of a zombie outbreak and have to survive in a hostile environment, full of monstrosities and other survivors. Think of it as a tabletop version of Left4Dead, as the title suggests. The role of the infected is played by another person, as opposed to the GM, so no faking rolls or favoritism. I expect lots of swearing.
And yes, I did say four players. My brother-in-law decided to join the gaame mere hours before it started, as he came over to my place on a completly unrelated note. So now I feel much more comfortable with a party of four, which is much more balanced.
Lastly, I may add some GM comments [in square brackets] to give further insight into the game.
Without further ado, the beginning of the chaos.
-----------------------------------
It is mid-november. Classes are just about finishing for our heroes. They have decided to meet at the cafeteria of the college they attended and then make plans for a night out.
The place itself is rather quiet, with three of our heroes already there, and two other people quietly minding their own business, probably studying.
Sitting together are Jayson, the quick and agile athlete [Fast Hero]; Kristine, the good-natured doctor-in-training [Dedicated Hero]; and Louis, a recruit in the police force that's more brain than brawn [Smart Hero]. Walking down the hall to join them is Jimmy, a very typical blue collar tough guy [Tough Hero].
Just as the latter hero is greeted by his companions, one of the other two people slowly rises from his chair and jumps onto the unsuspecting student. The latter is bitten in the shoulder. A short but violent struggle ensues. The victim manages to strike the attacker's throat, who is now suffocating. Some screams can be heard down hallways and even in the kitchen. It is then that the heroes decide to leave this place and take shelter at Kristine's apartment, which is nearby; a five-minute walk at most.
As they walk through the campus, they notice heavy traffic and can hear cars crashing into each other off in the distance, only muffled by the sound of panicked drivers either shouting at each other or using their car horns to express their anger. While crossing the street, Louis and Jayson almost get hit by a car. Soon afterward, they pick up the pace as they see that they're being followed by five other people, who seem rather intent on getting to them. Once the heroes get in front of Kristine's apartment building, the suspicious followers charge forward, intent on attacking. As they cross the street, though, an out-of-control pick up truck hits three of them, skids and hits the elevated sidewalk, which causes it to flip over and land upside down near the party. The truck dropped a crowbar and a ten foot chain, weighted at each end with large hooks.
The two remaining attackers press on. Jayson picks up the crowbar and Jimmy takes out his small utility knife. As they defend themselves, Kristine and Louis investigate the truck. They find the driver is dead, probably killed on impact. In the cabin, they find a medical kit, full of bandages and other healing amenities. Louis, figuring that the dead guy won't be needing it anymore, picks it up and hands it over to Kristine.
A woman's scream is heard from a second-floor apartment. Jayson and Jimmy climb up the small balcony and help the others get up. [They went straight there. I had expected them to run against the boarded entrance, but skipped that part and went straight into the alternative.] As Jayson opens the patio door, he sees a person lurching in the apartment, covered in blood. He quickly dispatches him, but screams can still be heard coming from the bedroom. As the heroes debate whether to help or leave, the screams get progressively weaker. Louis and Kristine want to get to her place, whereas Jayson wants to know what's going on behind the closed door. Jimmy is uncertain what to do; he agrees with Jayson, but took a nasty blow out in the street. After a while still, nothing can be heard from the room. they knock on the door, but only get a grunt in response. at This point, Jayson is fed up and kicks the door open. Inside is a gruesome sight: a young woman has started to eat an elderly woman's arm. Kristine and Jimmy have to keep themselves from vomiting, but Jayson resolutely charges and kills the cannibal.
After taking a breather, Kristine examines the cannibal's corpse, but finds nothing unusual aabout it... Jayson figures that he might as well loot the place; Louis and Jimmy follow suit. Jayson finds a large garbage bag and dumps food into it; Jimmy picks up a large cooking knife and even finds some hockey shoulder pads, which he immediately dons.
After the looting is done, they head for Kristine's place, on the fourth floor. Jayson packs in more stuff into his garbage bag once he gets there and prepares a meal for everybody. Kristine patches up Jimmy with her newfound medical kit while Louis turns on the TV and computer to see what information he can uncover.
All major media networks report the same thing: a strange outbreak has occured and people all over the globe are acting strangely; either attacking others or screaming in pain, with blood pressure quickly rising and dying within a few minutes. Other than that, Louis finds all your usual conspiracy theories.
-----
The next morning, roughly at 6:30 AM, our heroes are awakened by the fire alarm. A panicking resident has decided to burn down the building to purge the infection! As the heroes head for the stairwell, they hear the sound of glass breaking, followed by a big fwoosh. Louis grabs a fire extinguisher and slowly makes a path for everybody to go through the building. Unfortunately, both barricaded exits are burning. So they decide to get out the same way they got in.
Once outside, they head to the parking lot to get to Kristine's car. There, they meet two more "zombies." They are easily defeated, but once they get into the car, two more come out from a neighbouring apartment building. Jimmy, the designated driver, backs up and waits for them to get closer. When the zombies are roughly fifty feet away, he revs up the engine. Now that they are close enough, he goes all out: tires screech and the car hits both monsters head-on, killing them in the process.
-----
They escaped the burning building and got a car to move around, but they need to get more equipment. It is then that Louis suggests they go to his place so he can grab his service weapon. That's fine and all, but what would normally be a ten-minute drive, will be that much more complicated. What dangers await them in the city?

sounds cool. seems like everyone isn't putting up with any zombie bullshit, and is just going all out.
im confused, what does this have to do with? a new left4dead game? or just some fan story? good either way.
For Runaka.
I'm basically building a tabletop game based on L4D. You can get more details from that link I provided.
like a real tabletop game? like a marketable board game? or just like something personal. sounds cool
Other than the previous post on this I don't recall reading the earlier posts on your game concept but something just stuck out to me:
"Jayson finds a large garbage bag and dumps food into it"
Is there a survival component to this or is it just balls out action?
I used to play a game called Twilight 2000 where rationing your supplies/eating and balancing the risk/reward of looking for food/ammo was a huge part of our campaigns. Regardless, this is looking nice!
This is sounding really cool - the game name is so perfect.
Excited to read more about it man - keep it up!
