Still working on a tabletop survival game

So I decided to go with a 10% XP penalty for death. And because I liked TrunksX's idea of having them KO'd, I figured that between 0 and -9 HP a character would be disabled: he or she could either attack once or move (crawl) 5 feet as a full-round action. At -10, they're KO, and the teammates must drag the KO'd character to safety to avoid the XP penalty. Naturally, it would be preferable for them to heal the ally before he can spring back into action.

But when I got to reading about healing and recovering HP, I sort of cringed.

You heal naturally just as fast as in D&D 3.5e - that is, 1 HP per level per night of rest or double that for a full day - but since there's no magic involved in d20 Modern, you pretty much have to rely on medicine, which isn't all that great when all is said and done.

The official rules state that you can use a Medical Kit to restore 1d4 HP once per day, and a Surgery Kit to restore 1d6 HP per level of the patient, who is then fatigued for an amount of time.

In a game that will be fast-paced and where I keep track of events over the course of minutes and hours (as opposed to days in your usual campaign), I'd like that my players heal a tad faster so they'd have a fighting chance.

I'd change the 1d4 to 1d4 per patient's level once per day (or once every 12 hours, maybe?) and surgery would recover 1d8 per patient's level, probably with a less severe "fatigue penalty."

    How about an adrenaline shot that is less of a heal and more of a bandage/makeshift heal. Maybe a severe penalty after it wears off so it is of more use in those "oh shit" situations where people are just running for cover.

    Well first off I think the 10% XP penalty for death is the way to go. Healing sounds more complicated than I would have thought, given that I've only ever played D&D 4e rules. I think 1d4 per level per 12 hours is fair, as well as your proposal for surgery. No need to have such a severe fatigue penalty.

    Sounds pretty good so far, you've got a lot of solid ideas. Keep us posted!
