Apparently, this is a thing. Capcom announced today that they had teamed up with Playboy Magazine to "bring sexy back to Dead Rising 2." I, personally, did not think that a game with a plot involving massacring the living dead with chainsaws tied to motorcycles lacked (or, for that matter, needed) sexy, but I was apparently wrong. According to the press release, the partnership adds not only a copy of Playboy magazine for Chuck to find, but ads and billboards as well. For those counting, this is the second game this year to have a Playboy tie-in, with Mafia II adding some unshaven retro beauties into their title as well.
Apparently, when Chuck finds the magazine, he'll unlock a special upgrade, though they aren't saying what it is. From the screenshots, however, we have to assume that the upgrade is his own personal Playboy Bunny. In that case, I suppose we should all start the search for this mysterious magazine, since its power is greater than we had ever known.
The press release (and a few more screenshots) are below. We'll be seeing the game next week at E3, so be sure to stay tuned for all of the Dead Rising/Playboy news you can handle. Odds are it's about three minutes worth.
CAPCOM® TEAMS UP WITH PLAYBOY MAGAZINE TO BRING SEXY BACK TO DEAD RISING® 2
The Magazines of Dead Rising 2 Get Saucy as Capcom Partners Up With The Legendary Publication to Bring The Bunnies Into the Game
June 11, 2010 – Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today confirmed that it has partnered with Playboy magazine to have content from the iconic publication featured in its forthcoming title Dead Rising® 2, scheduled for release later this year for the Xbox 360®, PlayStation®3 and PC platforms.
“The Sin City-type environment in Dead Rising 2, Fortune City, is a natural playground for the Playboy Bunnies,” said Seon King, Senior Director of Licensing for Capcom Entertainment, Inc. “We have integrated the Playboy brand throughout the game in ways that bring even more life to Fortune City and add to the user experience.”
Players that discover the Playboy magazine in the game will receive a unique and special upgrade for Chuck Greene, the main character in Dead Rising 2. Furthermore, players will come across Playboy ads and billboards that will feature specially selected issues from the magazine’s 57-year history.
The new magazine system for Dead Rising 2, which will feature Playboy along with various other publications, is an evolution of the popular book system from the original Dead Rising game. Along with the special Playboy issue, there will be a variety of different themed magazines that Chuck will be able to pick up for bonuses to use to help fend off the zombie hordes along the way.
