That's it, folks, I'm calling this one. After promising to reinvent the series, it looks like Game Freak is only going 5% of the way towards the game they had said they were making. This most recent trailer shows off a bunch of gameplay for the upcoming Pokémon Black/White, and while it certainly looks fun, it hardly appears that "every aspect will be reborn innovatively" as originally promised. Instead, they've bumped the graphics up to where they should have been all along, added a handful of new Pokémon, and included the ability to fight 3v3 battles. Yeah, because 2v2 battles were the highlight of the Pokémon series. That's what brought in the sales.
Sorry if I sound bitter, it's just that I was excited to see innovation. Game Freak has made quality titles for over ten years, though the formula hasn't changed for a long, long time. Even Nintendo, who essentially remade Zelda every three years since the 1980s, has done something different each time. Instead, Game Freak is acting like they're making a Madden game.
I wanted to see what would happen if they went back to the drawing board and did everything they ever wanted to do with the franchise. Instead, it's another incremental upgrade, with another hundred Pokémon and a few new locations. Hopefully I'm wrong, but for as fun as this trailer is, it hardly inspires confidence of innovation.
Also, totally calling dibs on the fire starter. I never get the fire starter. I want it this time. Dibs.
