Wii Party Details Revealed, E3 Debut Likely

80+ Minigames to Include Such Hits As Hide and Seek

by Jonathan H. Cooper

Recently, Nintendo announced Wii Party, though the reveal stopped at the name. It was assumed that the title was going to be a minigame compilation based on the name, with some speculating that it was a spiritual successor to Mario Party, with the popular Nintendo characters replaced with Miis. It appears, after the first leaked information today, that said speculation is likely partially true. According to a listing at HMV, the game is to have 80+ minigames, a major jump from Wii Sports Resorts' 12. The quaity, however, is yet to be seen, as some of the games are... well... a bit strange, to say the least.

Three of the games listed are below:

  • Wanwan Karuta: The Wiimote for each of four players plays back a different sound. Which sound matches the animal that's shown on screen?
  • Remote Control Hide and Seek: Hide your Wiimote somewhere in the room and have other players search for it, relying only on the sound made by the Wiimote.
  • Sensitive Bomb: Hold the Wiimote like a bomb, and try to pass it off to other players without shaking it.

While Sensitive Bomb and Wanwan Karuta sound fairly traditional, and would have fit at home in a WarioWare or Mario Party title, Remote Control Hide and Seek is a bit off the deep end. Asking players to "hide the Wiimote" might be a recipe for disaster, especially considering the Wii's demographic. Children might not see the error in hiding a Wiimote in certain places that might make it difficult to get it back, while teenagers... well... they're a bit strange, to say the least.

We expect a full unveil at E3 this year, and a release set for later in 2010. This is definitely cut from the same cloth as Wii Fit and Wii Music, in that it's definitely not meant for the "hardcore" gamer. In other words, don't be surprised or upset when Shigeru Miyamoto comes out and plays "Hide the Wiimote" with Cammie Dunaway and Reggie Fils-Aime. Dear god does that sound dirty...

No matter how stupid these minigames sound, this will sell a bazillion copies.
