Super Mario 64- Touched Up For The Better!

A Great Remake of a Great Classic on a Great Handheld

by josh

This is an awesome remake of the game "Super Mario 64" that was a launch title for the Nintendo 64. Some improvments are that you can play with Wario, Yoshi, Mario, or Luigi. Also, you can play wirelessly with people up to 100 feet away from you, and only one person needs a game pak. Now, let me go into detail on all the different aspects of the game.

Graphics:10/10
Simply put, this game has awesome graphics. Much better than the original, plus since they are on the DS's little screens, they look even sharper. They also greatly improved the camera from the original. You can zoom at any time, by touching arrows on the touch screen.

Controls:10/10
Some people have complained that the game is hard to control, because you have to use the D-pad. Not true. The game is very easy to control with the D-pad. And for those who don't agree, you can use the thumbstrap included with the DS to make the touch screen act like an analog stick.

Comparison to original: 10/10
You may think this is an exact remake. Not true, at all. As I said before, you can play as four different characters, each of which has their own special abilities. Remember the first misson in the original, where you had to get to the top of the mountain, and throw the big bomb? Well, in this version, you play as Yoshi, get to the top, and as the big bomb is throwing little bombs at you, you can catch them with your toung, and spit them back at him. Also, there are mini games, thrity new stars, and three new courses. The framerate has also been improved on a ton since the original. I'm sure you heard that they added new bunnies, and I just want to clarify that these new bunnies don't get you stars, they get you mini games. This is definitly not just a port, they really added.

Audio: 10/10
Again, this game just shines here. Using the DS's stero sound, this game manages to replicate, and in some cases, surpass the 64's version in the sound category.

Multiplayer:10/10
A completly new feature to the game is multiplayer. You can connect wirelessly with up to four people within 100 feet of you. Only one person needs the game pak. You can play cooperative, where you go through the levels, as a team, getting as many stars as possible, or you can play in some brand new mulitplayer courses, competing againts each other to see who can collect the most stars, whcih are scattered throuought the course. In all my times of playing, I have expierenced no lag during this process.

Overall, I'd say this game is definitly worth it

Nice review josh. I actually have Super Mario 64 for the DS but have never played it. I got so wrapped up in other games I had totally forgotten about it. Now I have a reason to go back an play!

I must be one of 3 or 4 people that hasn't played this game, heh. I'm ashamed to say I've only ever played Super Mario 1 & 3. (Does Paper Mario count?).

But I may break down and get it - not a huge fan of platfomers normally but always read good things about this one and would probably be a lot of fun in portable form.
