SO I turned my Xbox 360 Elite on today to play a little Halo Wars, and I got the RROD.
My first Xbox which I bought at launch when I was still a Gamestop store manager RRO'D before Microsoft extended the warranty, so I upgraded to an elite out of pocket. When using the Microsoft provided transfer cable to switch hard drives, my fiancé lost the ability to play the Xbox Live Arcade games I already downloaded. Then that Xbox Elite's video card died and I called Microsoft to have it repaired and that was just out of warranty so I just bought a new Elite. Now this Elite got a RROD. I called Microsoft and told them that I do not want my system repaired, that I wanted a new Elite with a Jasper chipset. They told me no. So I got a supervisor. After describing everything I've already said in this paragraph, and stating that I own 68 360 games, have a 50,000 gamerscore, and have purchased 3 systems at a considerable loss, he also told me I can't have a new one. I then told him that I wanted HIS supervisor, and if I can't get a new system I will buy yet another one, and then be joining the class action lawsuit against them. I took me five times of asking for his supervisor and him deflecting that request until he said "It doesn’t matter how many games you have or how many systems you've had, if I escalate this any further I will get penalized, and the next person will just tell you the same thing I told you". I told him that I'm sorry if he gets penalized, but I need a new Xbox. He then said that there isn't anyone above him (after saying he'll get penalized if he escalates it further), and gave me the number to the corporate office. Then he said the corporate office is just going to re-direct me back to him.
In conclusion, Microsoft just does not care about it's loyal customers, and I feel that there is just something wrong about about that. Now I can see why more and more people are buying Apple.

With the number of people who got completely screwed by the RRoD, you think Microsoft would consider itself lucky that it still has customers. I know giving red ring victims a new system with a Jasper chip isn't their usual policy, but considering your history with it I don't really think it's an unfair request.
I say keep fighting, see what you can get done. If there's one thing I learned from GameStop it's that customers who keep fighting usually get their way.
I sent my very first redring off last week and I just got a call that it was arriving back via UPS tomorrow. But I have no idea what will be in the box. However it took three days for Microsoft to get it and then only had it for 4 hours before sending it back to UPS. So my guess is that it is a new unit. But with what chipset, I wonder...
I am very happy that i only own a ps3 and will never buy a 360 untill they fix this issue for good.
Why do people still bother calling? The website has a drop down menu... if your system RRoD's it says no charge, all other problems cost like $100. Just say it's an RRoD and be done with it.
I called because I don't want to pay shipping just so I can have a refurbished 360 mailed to me 2 weeks later. I want a NEW Elite. I've spent over a thousand dollars on 360 hardware alone and it's unfair for me to have to buy another one or get a used one for my trouble.
Stop getting Elites! Elites don't have the issue fixed. When mine died I got an Arcade from newegg. You have to make sure it has the jasper chip, that's the kind with the issue fixed. You can tell because the power supply will have a wattage below 175 (I think mine is 150 if I remember correctly). I just got the Arcade and slapped my Elite HD on there and everything is great.
They give you free shipping on anything you label as RRoD on the website. And /agree with femjesse...
It's a real pain in the ass talking with their customer support. I know it sounds ridiculous but I honestly think their main objective is to just get you off the phone sometimes. It's really frustrating. I would go with seanasaurus's suggestion.
