5a.m. Rant by Mikhailov
Warning: It's literally 5a.m, so my ranting might not be my best writing.
Years ago, I played an MMO called Ragnarok Online. I had a friend who played. He played all girl characters. This is a game that bases all of the characters on your real life gender. Whatever gender you chose when you created your account was the only gender your characters would be. This meant that my friend purposely labeled himself as female just so he could have female characters. He was a dancer, the most scantily clad character class in the game, and his name was "Trixie McAmplebosom."
Now I was forced to play all guys, but little did I know I would fall down a similar path just on the virtue of being a guy.

My first female character was a Selkie in the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (a game that has was so awesome, Square Enix has not been able to replicate it as well in the sequels...Echoes of Time comes close). Her name was "Noni." Noni was my nickname at the time, so the only reason I picked her was her outfit...a truly guy maneuver.

My second female character was a Druid in Warcraft. She is very well-dressed, and had a very classy character. She only made it to level 40. My level 80 is very much a male character. Why I chose to make a female character in WoW I don't know...the male Night Elves looked ugly. This led to about 3 more female characters before I quit the game. Note that her name is Sytheria. I use this name with my Echoes of Time character, and my Guild Wars character. I didn't realize when I "invented" the name that "Cytherea" is a porn star...seriously I didn't. Everyone in game thinks I knew this fact, however. I usually reply with a frustrated "I'm aware."

Both of my Guild Wars characters are female. This is Sytheria Nightwind's sister, Arathia Nightwind. I just made her two days ago with my clearance purchase of GW: Factions (the price was so low I bought a copy for me and for a friend). The characters are so beautifully rendered in GW that I can't help buying the most revealing armor I can find. She's the sexiest Assassin I've ever found...I wonder if male characters will come onto me.
As you can see, I've had multiple reasons for representing myself as a woman in various MMOs. When Star Trek Online comes out, I even plan on representing myself as a female Vulcan. I do this to either enjoy the character I have to look at, or there's a deeper story I invent for the character. Do I flirt with guy characters to play with their minds? Absolutely not. Am I misrepresenting myself by doing this? Do these actions offend actual female gamers? What are other motivations for males playing females in game? Have you ever done it? I'd love to hear your stories and thoughts.

I find it funny that guys use the excuse : "If Im going to have my camera on something's ass, it better be something's ass that I want to look at" and then makes a girl character. But the same doesn't really apply for girls. Not always.
I don't play male charactersThe reason is simple: Female characters in any game are more fun to dress.

I tried it once with a character for the Paper-&-Dice game Big Eyes Small Mouth (the first edition). We used the Tenchi Muyo universe for the plot. I played a cybernetic Galaxy Police officer that was favored by Lord Kagato. I hated him for who he was, but I loved him for his ideals. Well, the character did, anyway. (Had to cover myself there.)
But I honestly don't get any enjoyment out of using a female character. It's less hit points and less damage to deal. Also weaker armor. So, no go on this one anymore.

I've heard the "I'm treated better" argument countless times. As that is for the most part true, I never believe that being the sole reason for creating the female avatar. I remember hearing a theory conclude that the reason males create female avatars is due to the masculine need to protect a woman. I wish I could find that article.

@Sean: People were so much more helpful toward me in WoW when I made a female Blood Elf pally versus a male Undead rogue. It was, in a way off putting because they would constantly check up on me... but hey, free golds! I wasn't complaining.

Yeah, any male gaming friends I have that played as females have always said the same thing to me: "I gotta stare at this person for hours upon hours - usually from behind. Why would I want to stare at a man's ass when I can stare at a hot woman's ass instead."
It's hard to argue that logic.

The bottom line for me is, 90 percent of the online gaming community is male. I don't like this fact, it's just the truth. If everyone was somehow forced to represent themselves truthfully online (genderwise) then WoW, Guild Wars, Free Realms, etc. would be huge sausage fests.
But more importantly than that, the few female gamers that do play would be even more relentlessly harassed. Partially because everyone could be sure they were actually female and partially because they would be extremely rare. I feel that because a bunch of guys enjoy playing with female avatars, it provides a better balance of in-game characters (closer to 50/50) and causes the boys to be a little more respectful. Because obviously when you flirt with a girl night-elf who's actually a guy player, you're totally gay!
Lastly, most of these games have a lot of character customization and equipment mechanics incorporated in them. AKA "let's play dress up"!!! Nine times out of ten, a full piece of plate metal chest armor on a male will be represented as a metal bikini top on a female character. Male characters are designed to look badass and female ones are designed to look hot. Or did you forget about that whole 90% of gamers being male thing?

Well it's not the ONLY reason...Other values end up being in a roleplaying sense. I like to invent stories and background for each character I make. The female characters I create have a past, a story, and a reason they exist....in the case of Guild Wars, the same rule applies, but I also....like you said....tend to dress her up like a skank.
At least to me, there is more than one value to making a female character, and I certainly mean no disrespect towards women. I suppose I should have put that in my article. :P

interesting article... on one hand, it's cool to think that the female characters are cool enough or strong enough or generally bad-assed enough to want to make them your primary focus. like, you don't need to play as a male character in order to win the game, or level up, etc etc. that's a good thing, right? on the other hand, yeah, it's a little offensive that the only reason you choose to play as a female is so you can dress her up like a skank. actually, "offensive" isn't really the right word... i'm not offended exactly i'm more bothered by the concept that there's (seemingly, hypothetically) no other value to creating a female character.
and to address what sean said - ok, you tried to play as a female character and got "swarmed" and found it annoying... now imagine you actually ARE female, and you just want to play the game as yourself instead of hiding behind a male avatar. and yet you are still incapable of getting anywhere without being constantly harrassed/hassled. "off-putting" doesn't even come close.

The only experience I've ever had playing a female character was in my first foray into Sony's Home. I decided to make my avatar a girl, short skirt, cute hair, the whole nine yards. I couldn't take two steps in the public areas without being swarmed by half-a-dozen male avatars dancing with me, proposing to me, etc. I found the whole thing rather off-putting.
