Are you getting a PSP Go?

I'm somewhat considering it...

by Mikhailov

I bought a PSP 3000 back in....April I think. Back then I had no intention of even thinking about the Go. I just wanted something lighter than my Phat. I got what I wanted, and I love my 3000...but here's why I'm considering jumping ship to the Go:

I own about 5 games: Dissidia, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Crisis Core, Rock Band Unplugged, and Ratchet and Clank. Of those 5 games, I play about 2: Monster Hunter and Dissidia...with Rock Band a close third. If I traded all of these in towards a Go, I wouldn't be destroying an entire collection. I would just have to replace 3 games. I did download FFVII and Castlevania, but I'm assuming those are linked to my account and are transferrable to the Go that way.

However then there's the downside: I would have to re-buy those three games all over again...and on top of that, what if I download and don't like a new game? There's no 7 day return policy for used downloads. I'm essentially stuck. Plus, like with iPhone's app store, it's very easy to click on purchases making this a potential bigger wallet drain than my 3000.

So I'm on the fence. I love the new design and possibility of having all my games saved on the drive to play whenever I want, but I'm not sure if I want to re-buy games I already have and pay extra money just to do it. I have one week to decide. What are your thoughts? What are you going to do?

I think you answered your own question, honestly. We've all felt the appealing lure of a new system, which can sometimes knock practicality right out the window. However, you brought up a point I didn't even think of: what if you buy a game you don't like? Buying used games, rentals, or borrowing from friends won't be an option anymore either. Not to mention, if you trade in your brand new 3000, you won't get nearly as much as you paid for it, same for the games. You will be paying a lot of money out of pocket to ultimately own the exact same system... just for the nicer design.

If you like having games with you all the time, buy a PSP case that holds UMDs (that's what I have, so I always have a handful of games with me). The PSP 3000 is a nice system, and you just bought it, so enjoy it!

    Hope this helped!

I do have one of those bulky black PSP cases with my three games in it, so you're right there's no practicality whatsoever if I do decide to buy one, and I'll probably pay $200 out of pocket with trade in to get those games back and pay for the balance of the PSP.

So why am I so allured by the shiny portable little thing?

@Mikhailov: Because you're human... and a gamer. It's only natural. We've all been there. Let common sense win and think of the extra money you'll have to spend this holiday season. On presents! Or... games for yourself. $200? That's three or four games right there.

I've got a really old fatty and I'm not upgrading. Athough I would love the reduced size, there isn't enought there to upgrade.

Excellent point about digital distribution(DD). While I rarely trade in games, I recently joined gamefly and put a bunch of PSP titles in. I wouldn't be able to do that with a Go. The more I think about this, the more I think it's going to be an epic fail. The DD only model works for the iPhone because the majority of games are fairly cheap(in comparison to handhelds/consoles) and gaming isn't the primary function.

While I sometimes prefer the digital copies of games(Warhawk, Burnout Paradise), this has made me realize that I don't at all want a DD only console to happen without some sort of transfer ability. The price of games is going to have to be greatly reduced for this to be successful. Ooh, there's the stock tip I've been waiting for. I'm going to short the first company that releases a DD only console :D

I love the design and portability, but I hate the price and no UMD transfers. Because of that I will probably have to pass on the PSPgo.

@Sarah: Hopefully common sense will win on this front...my brain doesn't always work that way. I'm continuing to fight the battle. The guy at Game Stop called it a "Shiny New Stuff" tax, but I think he meant to say "Stupid" tax but didn't say it because he wanted to sell me a PSP Go.

And if the battle is lost, at least I'll get to make an Unboxing video for GV like me and QMarc did with the DSi.

I'm certainly going to pass on the PSPGo. It hasn't shown me anything game wise worth buying it for.
