iPhone 4 LiveBlog Recap
For those who don't follow my Facebook.
by Mikhailov
As you all know, today is the day when thousands upon thousands of people try to steamroll each other in an attempt to get the iPhone 4. I got home about an hour ago sporting my new Smartphone (same as my old Smartphone). I did a "liveblog" of sorts on my Facebook, but not many people have access to that (and I didn't do this on Twitter). I decided to post my various statuses and times here.
3:45am: I've given up on sleep at this point. Leaving on an hour to line up for my iPhone 4.
5:15am Preorder line- already ridiculously huge. Tons of overnight campers.
5:30am Every one of us. All hundreds of people standing in line cradling our iPhones for entertainment while we wait for a newer iPhone...are all nuts.
(I dove face-first into Eclipse in my iBooks app at this point...my students read it and man is it adult for them! I also took the time to talk to some of the employees and people behind me. All were scary, scary people!)
6:51am 9 Minutes to go!
6:55am Hopefully...the last picture taken from my 3GS.

(To which QMarc80 commented "Wow! That's a LOT of nerds!")
6:56am We're Moving!
7:10am Nutri Grain bar while waiting to get in. Tasty!
7:30am Ok the line is NOT moving! Getting nervous!
8:10am And I'm syncing the iPhone 4 as we speak. Aside from an issue with an iTunes gift card, everything went very smoothly!
So roughly about 3 hours of waiting in line amidst mass chaos to get my iPhone 4 on release day. My friend already called me using Face Time, and I have been completely unable to get my eyes off of this fantastic display. The HD video is awesome, too. To demonstrate this for you, I downloaded Apple's iMovie for iPhone and made a little clip of my morning.
Oh before I show you the clip: did I mention the screaming girl? The one who couldn't get an iPhone 4 because she didn't preorder and she didn't get here early enough to get in the absolutely massive line of people who didn't preorder? She was taking her frustrations out on her boyfriend (on the phone) and Apple employees (she called them liars). I wanted to record her using my iPhone 4, but I knew I'd get a slap in the face and my phone robbed from me. I kept walking.
Ok Ok here's the video.
Now I don't know what happened there. YouTube said the video quality may improve when the video is done being "processed," and they threw an ad for the song I used. Curse youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
I did upload that video in 720p however, and if that's really the upload quality, I have to say I'm a little unimpressed. It looks great on the phone. At the very least, it shows you the awesome movies you're capable of making on the go....with very little exposure to the software. Anyone can pick up iMovie and do what I just did.
I'll do one of my "What I like/don't like" reviews a little later. I'm sooooo tired.

Nice write up. I really want one, but my contract isn't up until next year.
Good article, though I cannot for the life of me understand this iPhone obsession. Can't understand waiting in a line like that for any phone, really.
Wow, the quality of that video is fantastic for being made on a phone!
I ordered mine online so I won't get it for a week or so, but I'm actually getting a little nervous with all this talk of the antenna design fail...
The antenna should be fine. People always make way to big of a deal over any problem in an apple product.
@Mihailov: Dude, didn't you preorder? I preordered and got it on Wednesday. Too bad my wife comandeered it though. I now get to wait for the white one.
@Sean: Call *639# if you haven't done so. Some contracts are being excused. I hear of Craislist and eBay fetching near $300 for the 3GS.
@Shagino: I did preorder, but I preordered to pick it up at the store. The line I was in was the preorder line. Those who didn't preorder were in a separate line, and they had not even touched that line when I left. Don't think a lot of people got a phone.
As far as the attenna issue, I bought a bumper case right away, so I guess I didn't notice it.
Also, $300 for a 3Gs? Wow I should put mine up.
@Mikhailov: Dude, that's hardcore. If I preordered for store pickup, I wouldn't have got up early.
Here's an idea for your 3GS:
Jailbreak it.
Buy the software to run it as a wireless hotspot.
Buy a micro-sim adapter so your new sim will work in your old phone.
Now you can use that to get your iPad on the net when you are out. Plus, you can stay on the unlimited plan and not have to pay for the right to tether.
I didn't think about that. I tend to have WiFi wherever I go though, so I might be better off trying to sell it for $200 or $300 if I can get away with it.
