Phantasy Star Ø (Nintendo DS)

PSO fans may like it, but otherwise its 10 years out of date.

Genre(s) Role-Playing

This will be a very quick review, as I no longer own this game. I traded it into Game Stop for half of what I paid.

Phantay Star 0 puts you in a futuristic Earth 200 years after the "Great Blank." You take on the role of a Human, CAST (robot like things), or Newman (Elf like things). You can either be a Hunter (Warrior), Ranger (Bowmaster), and Force (Mage). Seems like your pretty standart fare. You have one hub town where you can buy items and go on missions. You have very few people you talk to, and you have some NPC party members you can travel with. While this is on the DS, and apparently PSO also had only one town, it is dissapointing that there are no new planets and towns to explore like in Phantasy Star Universe.

Exploration in mission maps isn't any more exciting. You are put in rooms where enemies appear. When they are dead you get a box of items. Then you go to another room (maybe finding a key along the way) where you do the same thing over and over until you get to a boss. Combat is pretty boring. You have a light and heavy attack, a photon art on each weapon you can charge up, and some magic. You also have items. Your map and pallete are on the bottom screen, while the action is on the top screen. In multiplayer mode (only if you're playing with friends), chat mode becomes Pictochat-Like (where you can draw what you want in a box). This would be cool if you could do this with everyone, but you're left stuck with a keyboard and canned sayings if you're playing someone not on your buddy list. I guess this is so someone can't draw lewd messages. No sweary Marys in Phantasy Star 0. Having said that, this game does get a boost in play when you are playing with a friend. At least you're not suffering alone.

The gameplay definitely isn't up to par with Phantasy Star Portable unless you're a true fan of the original PSO...where you may feel at home. Anyone else will just be bored by the 8-bit music, the boring mission play, and the lack of anything fun happening. If you are willing to see past the flaws of the game, or you spent countless hours on the original, there is plenty to do there. Someone looking to do more should probably leave this one on the shelf.

unfortunately this assessment is so quick. So for folk who be aware of much less about this sport becomes difficult to understand properly.
