Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PlayStation 3)
Great in 2007 and still great now!
by Mikhailov

This game was originally released in 2007, but being a recent PS3 owner, I decided to buy it. I missed out on the whole PS2 R&C experience, so I'm unfamiliar with a lot of the characters. This did not matter when I went to pick up this game as I was sucked into the action instantly.

Ratchet and Clank starts off with our heroes fine tuning an awesome looking motorcycle. Very soon, our heroes get a distress call from Captain Qwark, a goofy "Zap Brannigan" like character who tends to annoy the hell out of everyone. It's Ratchet and Clank to the rescue as we soon find out that Emperor Percival Tachyon is behind the assault on multiple planets. He hates Ratchet's race because they destroyed his.

Both the story and the gameplay will suck you into this game until you get yourself to the very last boss battle. There are several different modes of gameplay just thrown into this game. You get to blast the hell out of robots with cool weapons like the Nano Swarmers, The Shock Ravager, and the Alpha Disruptor. Supposedly there is a wespon called the RYNO (Rip You an New One), but I didn't find it through my playthrough of the game. I should note that you When playing as Clank, you are solving puzzles (including the puzzle of "who the hell are the Zoni"). About halfway through the game, the Star Fox-like spaceship sequences start. Also mixed in are rail grinding, boss fights, wrench turning, experience grinding, decrypting (using the SIXAXIS), orbital skydyving (also using the SIXAXIS), and arena matches. If you can't do it in Tools of Destruction, you don't need to. Only at the end does this get frustrating. Most of the time, you'll find this game easy. This in no way, shape, or form takes away from the fun. The only REAL complaint I had was with the decrypting. It was so frustrating that I groaned everytime I had to do it. Once I got through it, I resumed my shooting and got over it.

The game is graphically beautiful with a detailed series of settings, even more detailed characters, and gorgeous CGI animation. Many people say this is like playing a PIXAR movie, and they are not lying. The musical score is wonderfully orchristrated. You know when you're dealing with pirates, taking a relaxing break, or sucked deep into pure evil just by the music.

This is the first review where I've actually played the game all the way through before reviewing it. I also think this is my first game that I rated a 10/10 (perfect score). The funny thing is a game from 2007 outweighed any other game I've reviewed this far. I can't wait to start the final game in the triliogy (I beat Quest for Booty last night). I can't imagine a game more fun and beautiful as Tools of Destruction, but QMarc tells me that Crack in Time makes ToD look like an NES game. Expect a review on that game as well.

I have meant to go back and play this game for two years. One of these days...
I felt as though it ran out of steam near the end, but loved it reguardless. I really need to ply Crack in Time.
